OK, so sometimes I start doing new things to help me overcome other things, like procrastination or bad habits related to tidiness. I suppose that's a vague statement. But, I've noticed that sometimes these new habits have tangible results on productivity and general well-being (that feeling of being prepared or secure in a situation, for instance). So, in this thread, I hope to occasionally post some ideas and actions that I've been using to make life more enjoyable. I hope it helps someone at some point.

A few starters:

We all sometimes fire up a DAW and quickly come up with something we think is cool. We save it as, "Ambient Idea 355" or somesuch. That's fine if you really can't be bothered to think about what those four bars of music really ought to be called, but three years from now, when you are moving projects to a new computer, "Ambient Idea 355" doesn't seem to be all that meaningful or useful. And you'll waste time re-opening "Ambient Idea 355" down the road if you eventually saved it as something better, because now you've got two or more files that don't correlate.

Action: Keep a tiny spiral notebook near your DAW at all times. Begin to scribble down words and phrases that appeal to you. Things like "Moon Shot" or "Continua" ... try to add new ones each day. So, when it is time to quickly name that snippet of good music, you draw from your storehouse and mark a line through the used ones. It's amazing how much easier it is to remember what a track is 'all about' when you've named it something meaningful. Or, if you don't like paper, learn a few markdown tricks and use something like Gingkoapp.com to create lists (that have the bonus of being searchable).

Overchoice is a real threat to productivity. Futurist Alvin Toffler even wrote books about the topic and noted that it's generally not all that it's cracked up to be. So, we all have access to some amazing freeware and amazing payware, both synths/fx and samples. We load our machines and projects up with the stuff and it's hard to narrow down the best choices because our attention is spread so thinly at times. Not always, but it happens.

Action: Since we know that we probably won't stop grabbing freebies or buying VSTs, I've noticed that treating an older laptop as a "source" for the 'lesser' things I don't want on my main machine has been fruitful. I'll fire up that old freebie drum sampler and render something from it into a Dropbox folder that's easily accessible to all my devices. I do this in idle moments when I'm not busy doing heavier artistic thinking/production. And as a percussion junkie, doing this has really added some spice because, since taking the time to like and save something out is meaningful, one starts to realize that such a process is a form of vetting. You save the good stuff, and when you have a decent pile of good stuff, you start to remember what it is and why you saved it in the first place. An action like this is really awesome when you layer up one-shots and render them out as one thing--don't even bother with saving it as a preset--just get the fruit of the work and forget about it since there's no need to junk up your life with a bunch of presets you probably won't need to open again.

Haha, this is spot-on. Yesterday I was thinking about making a handwritten log/masterplan of all my creative projects.
Also I made an "auxiliary workstation" laptop setup the other day for stuff like digitizing records/tapes and old 32 bit Windows software.

Is that Valkyrie SuperGuitar on your site a proof of concept or something that actually exists? Fun to look at!

Cool, I should probably consider making a list of my wider set of projects, too! I've traditionally had too many irons in the fire, but lately I'm starting to cull those impulses.

Yeah, the Valkyrie is a real thing! It's pretty much my crowning achievement in life as far as tackling a complex problem, creating a plan, and executing that plan. It took about two years to get everything in place, including building the website.

My #1 is a hardtail Valkyrie with a mahogany body, thick flame maple cap, maple neck with an ebony fingerboard, etc. I play it every day!

Interesting advice re. spiral bound notebook. I always battle between using technology like my phone/computer over "the old ways" of writing something down on actual paper. In my mind it just doesn't make sense to use paper as it's not searchable, not accessed from all over the world, easily backed up etc. But, lately, I've been using various little notebooks for DAW, VST(i) notes etc. and especially in song arrangement and lyrics it's been very helpful! Again, it's a constant battle in my mind because I tell myself to try to use the latest tech but seem surprised when these old ways just work! I'm 56 so not sure if it's a product of using those ways from before when that's all we had or something within us as humans that work this way better. And, of course, it would depend on each person as to its effectiveness. But, sometimes just reaching for that "lyrics" paper notebook or the one that has notes scribbled in it about certain VSTs I liked is easier than going to something on my phone or on the same computer as my DAW for some reason. I need to keep reminding myself to not become a slave to the tech but use it only when it really works for me and use the old ways where they work better for you, whatever the reasons! Anyone else struggle with weird crap like this?

^^^ Yep, I am always second-guessing myself.

Premise: More time spent doing a task that involves skill leads to more skill or more efficiency in that skill.

Action: Get yourself a good desk, chair, iPad stand, and get your main MIDI controller set up for maximum ergonomics. Why? Because if you don't have those things, your body will become fatigued more quickly and you'll abandon the tasks at hand--robbing yourself of the skill-enhancing flow of work. I was constantly suffering from neck pain until I bought one of these things for my main iPad. Really helped and it's solid!

I have a notebook and pencil by my bed as well.

Premise: There seems to be pressure created both outside of us and within us to measure up to an ideal.

Action: Basically, relax!

Enjoy being a young person who is exploring electronic music and production for the fun of it, knowing that you're also forming computing habits that may come in handy in other areas of life. Or, enjoy being a middle-aged person whose musical goals don't align with the general Western-cultural aspirations, knowing that you're keeping your mind sharp and not watching as much TV like many of your peers. Or, enjoy being an older person who is content to make new sounds, assembling them into compositions that are the fruit of wisdom and hard work, knowing that, at the very least, you're leaving a part of yourself behind to be found and enjoyed by other people long after you're gone.

Are you being serious or poking fun? Either way, didn't mean to offend--just trying to acknowledge some chapters in life that seem to evolve and affect one's view of the past and future.

I am seriously poking fun. I just turned 60. I'm still in crisis about it.

Premise: Time off sneaks up on you.

Action: Start thinking ahead, plotting things you might do to make the most of a holiday or long weekend. We've got Independence Day coming up next week, so it'll be interesting to make a list of potential things to do in my studio. As for me, I'll definitely be dusting some things as it's horrible in here right now, and will probably be prepared to capture some sounds from the neighborhood as people go absolutely nuts with firecrackers here and it makes dogs start barking, too. I love the weird things you can do, as far as ambient pieces, with audio like that.

Action: Be lovable again!

Boy, I really dropped the ball on this idea, eh? Definitely thought I'd be pumping out ideas left and right.
