I need to record some lectures ~3 hours each.
I need something to occasionally record sounds and lyrics.
I would love to have a flash memory mp3 player.
Would an mp3 player, like an iRiver, be fine for this? I know they have line-in for recording with a mike, but would I be better of getting a dedicated voice recorder? the voice recorders seem so much more expensive and less flexible.
Any thoughts?

I have an iRiver. It would work fine for this. It can record to mp3 or wav, one of the only ones that can record uncompressed audio. I have an H120, which was actually almost as expensive as an iPod. I've seen cheaper flash mp3 recorders.
One thing to note, some people have had serious problems with the iRiver dropping samples while recording, which would bugger it for pro audio use. I've never had the problem, I've even done several tests with sine waves, but luckily it works just fine for me.
Cheers,
Steve

if you can't find any luck there you can always go for a MD recorder. you can fit _juuust under_ 3 hours of mono audio onto a minidisc (i have many hours of proof!), and it's easy enough to swap em over. only problem is that you need to record them into your computer afterwards as digital transfer in netMDs is one way (to the device) only
Kick, punch, it's all in the mind.

no MD I'm afraid: just not usable to have to record everything back into the computer. I need data file transfer.
