What's your preferred upgrade scheme?

Just to name a few upgrade schemes (sorry don't have any idea on Avid Pro Tools and Logic)
1) Cubase/Live/S1/Reason - Certain amount of upgrade fee to the next major release. You may need to pay for the upgrade for around 2 - 4 years. But note that Cubase will charge you for the .5 version.
2) Bitwig's - Renew your Upgrade Plan for 12 months. But they ensure you will enjoy few rounds of update per year.
3) Your input?

Happy to pay for upgrades, it gives developers incentive to make them worthwhile.

The combos in this thread are ridiculous.tooneba wrote: Tue Jun 09, 2020 5:14 am Is Cubase same as Live? Isn't Steinberg charging more to upgrade when you skipped versions?
Logic and FL?

The cost difference between your Mac and my PC means I could pay $100 a year to keep Cubase up to date from now until I die and never make up the difference.

That would be more like 6 years. (It's 2 major versions)kvotchin wrote: Tue Jun 09, 2020 4:52 am I think Reaper’s license is good for, what, 2-3 years or so? I’m not exactly sure, but it seems reasonable, particularly for the price. I certainly don’t mind paying it.
I purchased my last license on 26/12/2013, and that ran out on the release of v6 which was late last year in December I think, so that's close enough to 6 years. I jumped ship in 2015 and wont be renewing my REAPER license.
I don't mind paying for upgrades, as long as it seems reasonable to me I'm happy to pay it.
[edit] it might even be longer, the Wiki has REAPER v4 released on August 3 2011, so if you purchased a license on that date it would have been valid until December 2019 (if dates are correct).

Also Logic going free upgrades forever is an assumption. FL has it stated in print, but Apple just kinda stopped charging upgrade fees when LPX was released. And they have said nothing officially about it. there isn't any promise that, for example LP11 might not show up someday and cost another 200 (or less, or more). The assumption is that Apple is gonna treat Logic like it treats OSX, which is reasonable to assume, but not a guarantee.

in your case then Cubase and Live are not the same in terms of upgrade chargetooneba wrote: Tue Jun 09, 2020 5:14 am Is Cubase same as Live? Isn't Steinberg charging more to upgrade when you skipped versions?

That's one thing, but also with Cubase it's pretty much guaranteed there's paid update every year, whereas for Live it can be several years between full version changes.tooneba wrote: Tue Jun 09, 2020 5:14 am Is Cubase same as Live? This should've been a poll. And you're missing options, too: there are DAWs with annual subscription (you lose access if you don't pay - ProTools?), there are those that you pay for full version upgrades only but it's pretty much guaranteed it's yearly (Cubase?), there are those with no upgrade cost at all (FL, perhaps Logic, too).cowby wrote: Tue Jun 09, 2020 3:20 am Just to name a few upgrade schemes (sorry don't have any idea on Avid Pro Tools and Logic)

Unless the goal of this thread was to take a jab on Bitwig, because you represented their scheme pretty poorly

Yeah, "no matter what version you are using upgrade price is same" is always incentive to old comeback users.cowby wrote: Tue Jun 09, 2020 5:57 am in your case then Cubase and Live are not the same in terms of upgrade charge

Don't you have to buy Logic again when there's a full version update, like from 9 to X (10)?

Good question... I'm not a fan of any upgrade scheme, TBH. If it was for me, only major versions paid versions, and a new major version every 6 years, the earliest. And a decent upgrade price, not almost 50% like Presonus takes for Studio One.
The upgrade scheme of Cubase is one of the worst, TBH, and one of the reason why I left the DAW. I mean, not that anyone has to upgrade to a new version, but, it was always tempting for me. Probably my own fault. The just serve the people who always look for something new. It's fair enough, if the market and the people are like that. They just do their job. Noone is forced to upgrade. Fair enough.
