That looks horrible, sorry to be frank. Not intuitive and straightforward at all. Maybe as an experiment - fine, but as an actual sampler for creative work? Never! Look at Ableton Simpler, Serato Sample or the new Logic samplers to see how it's done properly!

Then the advanced features are only going to benefit a tiny fraction of users. Especially if you remove the ones who already have Kontakt etc. How many people actually set up their own round-robin velocity-layered sampler instruments with macro controls?
Hmm, there is a better option actually: support .sfz import. Then there is a range of free and commercial stuff out there which can be used.

That's not necessary in a sampler either. Look at Tal Sampler. What people are talking about is a SIMPLE sampler, not a full featured instrument like Kontakt. Did you EVER look at the features present in a classic instrument like Emulator II, for example?imrae wrote: Thu Jun 11, 2020 9:47 amThen the advanced features are only going to benefit a tiny fraction of users. Also, the actual act of sampling is a feature not that many third party samplers provide.
Slicing would also be nice.
For me, the perfect thing would be something that goes into Battery territory (doesn't need to have all it's features) + slicing + actual sampling capabilities.
Not saying RS5K should have all these features, but as of now i literally have no use for it in it's current form.

Indeed, TAL Sampler is great! For maximum awesomeness it should sample though and it's also not the most suited for drum duties.Look at Tal Sampler

We have to differentiate here between a sampler as library playback and creation engine (think Kontakt, SFZ, EXS multisamples) and b a sampler as a creative tool for sample mangling (think Serato Sample, Ableton Simpler, Logic Quick Sampler).imrae wrote: Thu Jun 11, 2020 9:47 am

If you want SFZ library playback, why not just use Sforzando, which is pretty much the most advanced and established SFZ playback engine?

Reaper is a horribly unintuitive DAW, I wouldn't put my hopes in the idea that it can be turned into an efficient, straightforward creative sampling workstation. You should forget it and maybe get hold of a free entry version of Ableton or Bitwig instead.

Many people use it as a creative musical and sampling workstation both professionally and as a hobby. It might not be for everyone but "horribly unintuitive" is just your subjective experience.Kazi7 wrote: Thu Jun 11, 2020 10:20 am Reaper is a horribly unintuitive DAW, I wouldn't put my hopes in the idea that it can be turned into an efficient, straightforward creative sampling workstation. Anyways, the next REAPER release will include improvements to some plugins, including RS5K:
+ RS5k: UI cleanup
+ RS5k: add Portamento setting
+ RS5k: allow loop to be enabled when ignoring note-offs
+ RS5k: improve UI for editing loop start offset/fades
+ RS5k: right clicking activity light sends noteoffs
+ RS5k: use a fixed-size ADSR view when using a looping sample
+ RSK5: allow easier setting of long attack/release settings when using short looped media
+ ReaEQ: fix processing artifact when automating parameters away from a non-automatically-bypassed state [t=208841]
+ ReaEQ: reduce CPU use
+ ReaSynth: add Portamento setting
+ ReaVerbate: reduce CPU use
(This is not the full changelog)

This shouldn't have been unleashed until the official release, as stated in their beta area...Danilo Villanova wrote: Fri Jun 12, 2020 5:16 pm Anyways, the next REAPER release will include improvements to some plugins, including RS5K:

Yeah it shouldn't have been unleashed because the UI cleanup is nonsense, the portamento does not work properly, the improved UI for loop start offset/fades is terrible and so is the way loops actually work anyway, the biggest problem with RS5K development is the fact that the people giving the most input are some old dudes who use multiple RS5K for making drumkits and have no idea how a real simple sampler (Simpler) actually works, and why it is so intuitive.

This shows exactly why this kind of things should stay in their pre-release forum... did you report there what mentioned here?bungle wrote: Sat Jun 13, 2020 3:37 pm Yeah it shouldn't have been unleashed because the UI cleanup is nonsense, the portamento does not work properly, the improved UI for loop start offset/fades is terrible and so is the way loops actually work anyway, the biggest problem with RS5K development is the fact that the people giving the most input are some old dudes who use multiple RS5K for making drumkits and have no idea how a real simple sampler (Simpler) actually works, and why it is so intuitive.

Anyways all this is moot - I cant see why people just dont write their own samplers with whatever colours they want. /s

I fully agree. As said before: Ableton Simpler, Logic's new Quick Sampler and especially Serato Sample are the reference that showcase how a creative sample engine is supposed to work: giving you the ability to quickly drop in a audio sequence, chop it up, mangle it, change the pitch or length without any too obvious artifacts and create a new musical idea in the process in the most streamlined manner...
Reaper is not great for"in the box" music production ( using mostly plugins and MIDI based composition) in general. Your description hits the nail on its head: these Reaper guys are mostly older guys and hacker type nerds, who love scripting some macros to do some stuff that no other DAW can do (that's what makes them happy apparently, but they lack the focus / understanding about what actually makes a streamlined and intuitive user experience.
Reaper can still be useful for other tasks, but I wouldn't use it as a substitute for Logic, Ableton or Cubase when it comes to MIDI based production, especially not for sample mangling stuff.
