christian f. wrote: Tue Jun 16, 2020 11:00 pm So far the sound samples are very underwhelming. Emulating an OB Xa only to make the same generic sounds you could do with pretty much any soft synth.
I doubt that it is easy to get exactly the same sounds with "pretty much any soft synth".

Today I wanted to post some more "unusual" patches (unusual for an OB-Xa) but i currently got 206 patches with all kinds of sounds in them. Would take very long to do proper audio demos of all of them.
Yorrrrrr wrote: Tue Jun 16, 2020 11:05 pm But I get you. I've never been overwhelmed with an OB-Xa either. But Obsession can do what it does, and so much more.
Exctly that. Compared to what i was able to do with OBsession i am sure i would be quite underwhelmed by a real OB-Xa. IMHO this is a case where software might be actually BETTER than the real thing (while i think it is the same with The Legend).

The OBXa is a pretty generic synth.

Got a few to work, and they sound good.

Crashing must be just my browser.

Exactly my point. The reason it is desirable is because of it's exceptional sound (quality).
I owned one for many years and eventually sold it and kept an OB 8 to have more options with page 2.
In these sound examples I don't hear anything that stand out quality or creative wise or something that could have been coming out of an OBXa.

Yorrrrrr wrote: Tue Jun 16, 2020 11:05 pm I would like to hear what you can do with it. Expect nothing short of amazing. Or.. it doesn't matter if it's Obsession. Can I please hear what you do with other synths?
If I want Oberheim sounds I just use my OB-1 or OB-8 ...and yeah .. those sounds are amazing.
These synths are all about quality and emulating them only makes sense if you can maintain that sound. The synthesis part is pointless. For synthesis there are already many many plug ins that can do much more than obsession can do.

Of course. DUNE 3 for example. Obsession is only meant to emulate generic OB-Xa and some additional tricks. And it sounds and plays awesome while doing it, regardless of what the OB-Xa is. Because it's better. And it's unique: as an analog polyphonic synth emulation it allows you to do things NO other software synth does (emulation or not). It's great, really.

What exactly is it that we're complaining about now?

1. That Obsession doesn't sound as good as an OB-Xa?
2. That the OB-Xa itself is a meh synth?
3. That the sound examples don't show off what the OB-Xa can do?
4. That Obsession isn't any different from any other synth today?

I can't keep track of what's going on without a score card. And honestly, if you think the OB-Xa is, in itself, just a meh synth, then what are you doing in a thread about an emulation of a synth that you don't like to begin with?

I love the OB-Xa. For that matter, back in the day, I loved all Oberheim synths. I thought they sounded better than all the leading competitive synths of its time.

Sequential Circuits
Moog
ARP
Yamaha

The only exception is the Polymoog because it was so unique. All the other synths, except for Oberheims, I could take or leave. They did nothing for me.

Then you should just wait for the demo to make up your mind. Like it buy it, don't like it move on.

I sold my hardware because I needed the money. Not because I didn't like the sound of the synths anymore.

Everyone has their reasons but for me the only reason I'd be interested in an OB-Xa emulation is because (tada) it emulates the raw sound of the hardware. Arturia failed in this regard imo and therefor I have no use for it and I wouldn't buy it if it were on sale for 50¢. As far as I'm concerned that's just one more thing cluttering up my browser. I'm not at all interested in extra bells and whistles that step outside of what the hardware synthesizer engine is capable of. I prefer those limitations in fact. I'm not saying I wont buy OBsession if they're there, as long as I can ignore them and it sounds like the hardware.

Anyways, any word on when a demo will be available or is that still up in the air? It's a long thread.

No word on demo or release date as of yet. But it's close. Damn close. Could be tomorrow. Could be next week...
