MIDI Learn in Sonar

I'm new to Sonar, and having no luck trying to map knobs on my MIDI controller to knobs on my VSTis. I've scoured the manual to no avail... I saw the part about using a "Generic Surface" to map CCs to Sonar parameters, but I can't see any way in that window to map CCs to VSTi parameters, only standard Sonar parameters such as volume faders. In the piano roll I can draw controller values for the parameters I want, but I can't use an arbitrary CC# to control those parameters. For example, a knob on my MIDI controller spits out CC#78, but I want to use that to control filter cutoff which appears in the piano roll as #37. Isn't there a MIDI Learn function for VSTi parameters? What am I doing wrong?
Incomplete list of my gear: 1/8" audio input jack.

Hey deastman,
I wish I had better news for you, but its not that kind of party with Sonar

In order to do what you want to do, you really need the VSTi to have MIDI Learn enabled on it.
Like you said, you can either draw automation with the piano roll, or add it as an envelope in track view, but there is really no way to assign faders to it without doing it some manually annoying way.
This pissed me off for months when I first got Sonar.

If it sounds good it is good.

In the words of the great poet Homer (Simpson),
