Not saying which emulation is better. I don't know the original. Just venting my opinion. Couldn't believe him not being able to recreate his own patch. So i did. And i found Arturia's sound more pleasing (to me ofcourse, YMMV)

Should be a very easy fix though.

Check it against Van Halen - 1984.

I said more @ GS.

Because opinions on sound quality are totally subjective. If anybody is going to make their decision on whether or not to buy this based on what other people think, they're most likely going to have a difficult time making a decision. They need to go by what they think and nothing else.

Can't listen to the track unfortunately. Did you set it to private maybe? You have to post the private link here then.

Right....i will 'un-private' it. Sorry

No problem. You can also set it to private, and just post the private link here, if you don't want it to be found on Soundcloud, I think.

The usual thing then. :ud:

doesn't matter if it is visible. Will remove it later. It's just to show that no one can hear the difference between the Arturia synth and the Synapse synth (on this config/patch). @Ingo: you know which notes are from your patch? :D :D :D

I will post a pic/screenshot with the notes later

Sound Author wrote: Mon Jun 22, 2020 4:00 am I'm just curious to know why the cutoff knob doesn't open the filter up all the way when the filter envelope amount is turned all the way down. Was that an aspect of the original OB-Xa that was emulated? I never owned or used them.
Yes, apparently that's how the original works. Arturia mentioned somewhere that they modeled this same behavior.
Synapse also mention it in the manual
Ah, yes, I see that now on page 17. Makes sense I guess. People are going to want to be able to do a side by side comparison with the original hardware...and we can always just use a constant in the mod matrix to open it up. Fair enough.
I wish they’d approached it like U-He approached cutoff in RePro. Give a full range but indicate on the UI where the original range was.

Interesting.
So this is 4 bars of each mixed in (maybe Synth A, B,B, A)?
To my ears or imagination Bar 1 and 4 sounds a tad bit punchier, but indeed if these are those two they are lot closer here than in my own experimentation.

Random notes. That's to say; D F on synth A and D F on synth B, and that sequence mixed up.

Really, if this was an opening for a track, nobody would hear that this were 2 different synths. And they really are.

-----

Don't know how close to the original OB-Xa it is (haven't had a chance to play one), but Obsession sounds fantastic to me. A lot of the presets are really good.

Just for fun, I tried to match some of them on my OB-6. I don't expect them to sound exactly the same, since the components are quite different (especially the filter), but it's my only analog poly synth, and they are at least superficially similar in features. My goal was just to get them as close as possible, then flip back and forth and see if one of them is clearly thinner or less organic sounding than the other. I haven't exhaustively tested all the features, but for the few patches I attempted, Obsession is absolutely on the same level. In some cases I can get them to sound nearly identical (again, that wasn't the point of the exercise, but I had to focus on sounds that are possible on both synths to get any real sense of whether they're of similar depth and character).

What Synapse has done here is really impressive. I had high expectations from the makers of The Legend, and Obsession does not disappoint. Whether it's an accurate recreation of an actual OB-Xa is not something I can answer, but for anyone who loves classic analog poly synths and doesn't mind using plugins, this is a great addition to your arsenal. I think it's good enough to make a hardware version of it (with the emulation running on DSP chips, like Roland's boutiques or System-8), but that's probably far beyond the means of a small company like Synapse, so we will have to settle for a plugin version of it.

I attached one of the patches I made on my OB-6 for anyone else who wants to hear them side by side. This is my attempt to match the "Low Saw Bass" preset that comes with Obsession. I can't get the filter shape to match across the entire range of notes, because the Obsession patch uses a mod matrix slot to increase the keytracking slope, but it's pretty close at A2, +/- an octave or so. You will need to adjust the gain on your OB-6 to match the levels. This is a sysex dump. You'll need a sysex utility to send it to your OB-6. If you're not familiar with this, now is a good time to learn, as this is how you back up and restore your own patches too.
This has been similar to my experience with Obsession and an OB-6. Dial them in similar and layer them and that can sometimes sound pretty amazing. So far, and this is as expected, Obsession is more "drifty" than the OB-6, but the OB-6 still sounds more "alive".

I'm expecting Diva to collect even more virtual dust. Can't bring myself to sell it, though. Repro gets frequent use... DSI/Sequential and Oberheims really do play well together (and, thus, the OB-6). I expect Obsession will be one of the first 3 software synths I reach for, depending on what I'm going for.

I doubt that the Arturia plugin sounds better (actually for my taste OBsession sounds MUCH better...) but do you have a screenshot of my OBsession bass patch being replicated in Arturia OB-Xa V? I got the demo version and it looks i can not load patch files there.

FWIW with similar envelope knob settings the envelopes in Arturia OB-Xa V are MUCH slower than in OBsession.

I surely can't hear a difference in my small desktop speakers...

The biggest difference I heard when I compared the two is in the filters really.
