I decided to upgrade from my moxf and bought a new modx.
First of all, the built in sounds are amazing, the keybed even feel better and the lcd touch screen is super cool.

With the moxf, I was using the MOXF Editor VST in fl studio, which was very convenient.
The vst displayed 16 midi channels, I could easily assign an instrument to each midi channel, record the midi and later the audio, and eventually I could save the project and have all the instruments saved in the vst.

With the modx there's a different vst called modx connect, and it doesn't feature the same 16 channels mixer type of thing like in the moxf editor, where I could browse through sounds and save the selections in the vst.

So my question is: where it is in the modx that I can save a selection of different 16 instruments so I can open it later when I'm coming back later to the project?
I'm sure it's something simple but the manual is so messy and I really don't have patience for this :phones:

This should be fully part of your MODX Connect plugin. Assign your parts on the MODX first... then insert your MODX Connect plugin on your DAW's track of choice. Hit "receive" on the plugin, which downloads the part assignments. Save the track and the part assignments are saved with the DAW's project file.

Note that unlike the MOXF, the MODX does not allow to to freely assign parts to any channel. Whatever part is in slot 1 of your performance page is channel 1, whatever is i slot 2 is channel 2, etc.

That's sucks a bit actually...I really wanted to manage everything (daw+modx) through one screen (pc).

Guess I'm gonna purchase the john melas modx tools.

I'm a Montage owner, and have found "Montage Connect" to be excellent. I set up my parts on the Montage first, throw "Connect" onto a track, and pull the performances in from the Montage and that's it. When I save my project, it saves the performances with it, so that when I reload the project, the Montage nearly instantly loads in the correct performances. Nothing more I have to do, but if there's any issue, I hit the "transmit" button on "Connect" and it forces the Montage to load everything up.

So from my point of view, I am managing that all from the PC. The Melas tools won't do that, either: they're editors and librarians, for the most part.

I think what you're asking is... "is there a way to create a combination of parts on the PC and push that to the MODX?" And the answer is...maybe, if you're willing to plan your workflow in advance.

Here's a more detailed explanation--remember to substitute MODX Connect for Montage Connect, as I believe they function identically.

The thing is that I wanna do all the sounds browsing and patch selection through the pc, I'm used to the workflow of vstis so working with the moxf editor was excellent for me.
It just feels more convenient for me to do it with keyboard+mouse and have the large display of my pc's monitor, where I can also see and manage my daw.

In that case, you're going to want the Melas MODX Performance Editor, sorry. The MODX has thousands of presets: there's no way you'd be able to manage that from the PC without some help. The Performance Editor can audition sounds from the PC, and you can reach the edit buffer from there.

I got the Montage version of it simply because it's far, far easier to create new sounds on these beasts than any other way. And you're obviously right that Yamaha doesn't have a competing product at this point.

Well, I demoed the Melas MODX Performance Editor, but I found out that it's not as smooth as I thought it's gonna be, presets are categorized in generic pre1, pre2 labels which can contain both bass+strings at the same label...I thought it's gonna be similar to the moxf vst where all instruments were in separate categories (piano, bass, synth etc..) so actually right now I'll stick to managing the sounds from the modx itself.
I'll just save the performances in the modx and import to modx connect if necessary and use them whenever I need to, feels more intuitive.

First world problems I guess...

I understand...that's how I do it, and while your original idea is much better, setting things up at the board isn't terribly inconvenient and encourages me to meet with different performances I might miss otherwise.

With that said, I still hope that Yamaha will eventually release a full vst editor for the montage/modx. I mean, if they did it for the motif/moxf, I see no reason why not having one for the newer series as well.
