(seriously) ...

Neither, imo. I haven't really heard much cutting edge or genuinely innovative experimentation here, but the quality of most I've heard is still pretty strong.

When it isn't lame noodling, that is :D

But I do wish people got over the delusion that their music is "experimental"...

... depends how you define experimental

when I step out from my norm, it's all experimental to me. cutting edge, no way.

BB, mostly.

can't speak for myself as i'm constantly uncertain of my productions' merits, but i can say that listening to others here provides me with a sense of real value in being something other than just a consumer - and that has become my yardstick of sorts.

there are many people i could mention, but one common factor appears to be integrity.

I like some of the music here but it doesn't seem very distinctive or original (including my own). I think we like mucking about with synths. A lot of the music sounds like it's looking for a film. I think multi-media is the way to go. Most sonic art is going in this direction.

Put it this way you wouldn't visit KVR to show off your latest pop hit. Perhaps we are poorer because this. There seems to be a level of unjustified snobbery that dictates the type of music that is celebrated at KVR ie synth noodlings. I mention this in light of the constant rubbishing that goes on here of hip hop, trance and other forms of dance music. This is a case of the emporers new clothes IMO judging by the standard of what's offered as an alternative.

Also, on many occasions if you've got a lot of mates here then the praise will flood in where as if you're unknown then it's usually critisism or disregard. It's often not based on the quality of the music on offer.

Well you did ask... :hihi:

oh really? I push them every chance I get.

There is blinkeredness in both directions. The 'experimental' people tend to eschew anything resembling mainstream music whilst the 'pop' people tend to spurn any kind of deviation from recognised musical structures. Both are equally daft in my opinion. I'm probably more on the side of the 'pop' people as I find much of the KVR cafe stuff (and it does tend to the 'experimental' side) unlistenable but I try to keep my mind open. :)

Music with dinner is an insult both to the cook and the violinist.

You mean you show of your Kylie/Britney/Eric Prydz/R Kelly pop tunes here? How long would your reputation last?

bluedad posts tracks he makes that he likes
i personally try to listen to everything i can time permitting
but i sometimes find myself in no position to comment as i have no skills to speak of.
my own stuff is posted here in the hope that people will tell me how to make it better.
and pop isnt just those artists or similar pop encompasses a great deal of different styles.its more a meeting of genres in my opinion?
as for my stuff being experimental,in sofar as i dont have a clue sometimes what this button will do yes but cutting edge no.

basically have fun doin what you do and let others have fun doin what they do :?

One thing I forgot to mention that may or may not be relevant is that when I went to apply for a Sonic Arts course I found out that they use Macs with Max/Msp as the tool to create 'sonic arts'. It seems that experimentation goes way beyond most of what's on offer at KVR. In fact the lecturers I spoke with hadn't even heard of KVR. I think experimentation in sound and music incorporates multimedia and is focused around installation. Perhaps that's why KVR is not hosting cutting edge sonic arts.

Some people here may dispute this and label the 'Sonic Arts' courses as promoting artistic snobbery. But perhaps it's like the difference between attending a life drawing course and a degree in fine arts. The tools, quality of teaching and scope for development are on different levels.

I've learnt a lot from people here at KVR but I don't see it offering a place for showcasing the cutting edge in experimentation. I wouldn't want it to develop into that role because I like the fact that musicians of all levels and abilities can come here and show case their music (except if your making hip hop, trance or pop... :hihi: ). So perhaps there is a bit of snobbery that goes on here but it's just based on the big fish in a small pond mentality.

Now you're making me want to produce pop!
