this was done in our new room (studio 3) which is intended as a versatile composing environment with a handy vocal booth and the G5 2.5 with CSX 3 is the heart of it (Studio 1 is on PT HD/TDM and Studio 2 has a G5 2.0 with Logic and PT LE)
besides all the commercial work that i do, my group is an underground hiphop crew and this will be our first single to be released in Middle Earth. it has been the most acclaimed track in our live performances and generally gets the crowd wild. hope some of you like it...
to you, my fellow North-Americans, the accents may sound weird... that's the flava in AKL.

nice to be complimented by a fellow Canadian... it can get a bit lonely donw here some times.
Jeez, i really tried to keep the dirt out of this one as much as i could to see who would end up liking it, even though it uses a pretty dehrrty vinyl sample from an obscure source. the rest of our material is pretty damn grimey, the way i like it. one track we even used live beat juggling (not massive, just club style) for the music, straight off a test-pressing and it's going on the album.

Really nice mix, although it sounds like you're popping a little bit on the mic with some of the p's. Maybe the pop screen was too close to the mic?

I like the music behind this although perhaps it is slightly too distant compared to the vocals. In any case - even so I liked it.
Does Hip Hop have breakdowns? I wouldn't have minded some fancy beats somewhere - like between one of the choruses and a verse.
I liked the reversed sounds used somewhere in the middle there although I didn't like the woman's voice being reversed - it didn't really gel for me and kind of threw things out or something.
The vocals were done well and I definitely liked some of the rhyming. It worked well even though I the content itself left me a little cold. However - it's a reality of the genre yeah? So I went passed that and appreciated the rhyming which, as I said, was really quite good.
The problem I had with the vocals was the "s" sounds. They were killing me a little and I think you should aim at taming those as you go forward. I'd probably have a similar difficulty with them myself - but just something to keep an ear on I guess.
Overall I liked this one. I'm no hip-hop afficionado but I was grooving along with it a little as I was listening.
Tame the sibilance, maybe bring up the backing music ever so slightly and perhaps remove a little reverb from the music (?) and add a few interesting drum fills.
And construct a cool website yeah? You've got a front page that doesn't lead anywhere. Getting about time to give your outfit a proper home on the net hey?

This song has about 43 502 things I don't like about it but as a group and being one of the two musicians in it I have to compromise. The music itself was originally written by Anime, the third rapper on it and I joined the group about a year ago and this is one of three pieces that we are keeping from the original lineup. And it is very very hard to convince him to let me "fix it up". I have done a lot to it already but it's one of those that he is very protective of.
one example is the drums... originally it had very dry and frigid drums that tooooo quantised. it took me 3 months to convince him to let me change the sounds of the drums and another two months to gradually let me humanise it just a little bit. i'm a drummer and i like my drums funky and rich... he doesn't
The vocal sample in the reverse bit, i can't take it out since it's just in the loop we use for the chorus and is just in there. i will try to EQ it out a little more. i guess i know the song a bit too much now and it doesn't prevent me from hearing his words over it like it would to most people. i totally acknowledge that.
and the damn sssssssss sounds... don't get me started... LOL
EQ'ing proved futile as it destroyed too much elsewhere so i will have to go spend some time editing individual wave files in great detail as if i were doctoring a picture in photoshop. a daunting task but i've done it before so i have an idea of the work involved. i just hate using a computer to its full potential for making music, it removes the sense of accomplishment in making a song from sounds.
all in all, i'm happy with it... it already plays on the radio, people have already been asking for an album at a big local chain of music stores, every show is full and the crowd is loving it. if i can just do better than that one for the rest of the album i'll be happy,
i normally don't master the music i make, i get my studio partner (Henry HD) to do it since he's 1. better at it and 2. hates hiphop. but this one was recorded, mixed and "mastered" for urgent release to radios all in one night. and i spent about 36 hours with a blazing migraine after that.
when you've worked with organic music for a long time and know how to treat it, mixing and mastering vinyl-sampled based hiphop to sound good is not the same. still i've been making it since 1993 (not mixing and mastering it though) and i like it dehrrrty. just my own taste.
oh and i think that the download time was associated with the server farm being under a tremendous amount of stress due to a complete migration because the pipes on it are massive and i usually don't have too much hassle transferring to and from it. and i'm in freakin NZ, home of the slowest international internet connectivity (f**k Telecom NZ, release the load to Telstra you ass f**kers)
