A SEM is a monophonic synth which is why you needed 4 of them to get a 4 voice. bx_oberhausen is already polyphonic and I think can go beyond 8 voices.

Yes. Up to 32 voices.electro wrote: Wed Jul 01, 2020 1:52 pm A SEM is a monophonic synth which is why you needed 4 of them to get a 4 voice. bx_oberhausen is already polyphonic and I think can go beyond 8 voices.

But can each voice be detuned and controlled like you could with the actual synth? You don't actually have 8 physical modules to tweak like you do with the hardware so it's not the same thing.

Nope.wagtunes wrote: Wed Jul 01, 2020 2:42 pm But can each voice be detuned and controlled like you could with the actual synth?
There is the TMT switch which randomizes the voices, but, you can't adjust every single parameter of the voices like in OBsession.

So then it's not a true 8 voice Oberheim.

Not just like OBsession though.
The 8-voice was literally 8 different, individual SEM's. So 8 full, 2-octave, mono-synths plugged into a keyboard, with some extra electronics to allocate the voices between the 8 SEM's. So each 2-osc voice could be completely different like stacking 8 monosynths to create a polysynth.
But I don't think the Bx Oberheim was meant to be like an 8-voice, but rather a polyphonic individual SEM.

True 8 voice Oberheim. The 8 voice SEM Oberheim I saw in Sam Ash. That's what I want in VST form. Right now, it doesn't exist and probably never will.chk071 wrote: Wed Jul 01, 2020 2:49 pm Define "true 8 voice Oberheim". It's a emulation of the SEM module, with added functionality.

There’s hope. Richard already said a Four Voice (or Eight?) would be interesting for him. But he likes to model perfectly so he’d need to have an Eight Voice in his hands to do it.

Look on the bright side: you've already got the Arturia SEM V, which doesn't sound bad at all, and is totally comparable to the Bx version so you can at least save some money there. Worst case: you could always get one of those MIDI voice distributor plugins, load up 8 instances of the SEM V, and try it out as an 8-voice. The Arturia doesn't seem like a total CPU hog so it may work out ok. And if it does, just save it as an template in your DAW. Can't speak to "authenticity" but it's one of their better sounding analog emulations IMO.wagtunes wrote: Wed Jul 01, 2020 3:00 pmTrue 8 voice Oberheim. The 8 voice SEM Oberheim I saw in Sam Ash. Have it, tried it, meh. It's no Oberheim. None of their emulations except for Synclavier and the CMI are all that great.Funkybot's Evil Twin wrote: Wed Jul 01, 2020 3:09 pmLook on the bright side: you've already got the Arturia SEM V, which doesn't sound bad at all, and is totally comparable to the Bx version so you can at least save some money there. So Wags, did you like the Obsession so far? If I remember correctly, you don’t find the hardware workflow/layout appealing.

I feel the same way about the Brainworks emulations (FX anyway). They often sound good but I don't think they're going out of their way to nail the exact sound and behavior of the hardware. More like, "get it about right, sounds pretty good, put a hardware modeled GUI on it, add TMT...and done!" They're fine plugins, but I don't consider them exacting emulations.wagtunes wrote: Wed Jul 01, 2020 3:17 pm Have it, tried it, meh. It's no Oberheim. And yeah, I'm not comparing the Arturia SEM V to any Oberheim, just don't think it sounds bad as a standalone instrument. Like the Bx FX sound good when you stop thinking of them as exacting emulations. There are a few Arturia instruments I can't say that about and just think sound bad. The SEM V sounds alright to me though.

I tried the Arturia SEM yesterday, to compare it to bx_oberhausen. Massive "meh". Not even the filter sounds remotely like Oberheim.wagtunes wrote: Wed Jul 01, 2020 3:17 pmHave it, tried it, meh. I really don't want to hate on Arturia (or on any other company), but, it's really beyond me how their synths are so highly rated among some. IMO, that kind of quality maybe was fine 15 years ago, but not today, when we have all that great stuff available.

Honestly, I haven't even downloaded the demo yet. I've been busy working on my new Diva sound library that I just posted in Soundware (waiting for the accusations of blatant advertising) so I really haven't been even thinking of it right now. And yeah, I know that, at least from a business standpoint, it would be stupid not the get this (SA stuff sells very well) but my frame of mind right now with all the crap going on in the world is too fried to even think about doing another library.Yorrrrrr wrote: Wed Jul 01, 2020 3:19 pm So Wags, did you like the Obsession so far? Now that I'm done with Diva, maybe I will download it and give it a shot. I'm sure it'll sound fine. Working up the enthusiasm to care is the hard part.
