Each album's got a certain something but no, I don't think they ever topped that classic album. For me it defined an era.deastman wrote:Is it just me, or is Dubnobasswithmyheadman the last good thing Underworld did? It seems like each release since then is slightly worse than the previous...
Oddly enough, I think the best they've done since then is 100 Days Off - without Emerson.
But then, I'm weird.

I found 100 Days Off to be rather bland house music. Kind of a joke after their earlier comments about how "Jungle saved Techno". When Second Toughest in the Infants came out, I didn't care much for it, because it was so different from Dubnobasswithmyheadman, although I saw the similarities to the Born Slippy/Nuxx release. Now I kind of like it. But you summed it up- they never topped that classic album.Glassback wrote:Each album's got a certain something but no, I don't think they ever topped that classic album. I actually saw the first Underworld incarnation back in 1988(9?). They opened for Eurythmics at a concert in Oakland, California. I didn't care for any of their music (Underneath the Radar? Blech!) but I was pleased that they played Doot Doot from the Freur days.
Incomplete list of my gear: 1/8" audio input jack.

Yeah, I'm a bit so-so about the Underworld stuff before Dubnobass. Same with Lemon Interrupt. A bit second rate.
But I remember Freur in the mid 80's. I still got a video clip from when they were on The Tube with all that glam clothing and weird instruments.
I loved it to bits at the time. Still do. Got the Freur CD now, with a couple of previously unreleaseds on it. Fantastic stuff, but a few of the tracks do now sound like music of it's time. Very very 80's.
I felt exactly the same as you about Second Toughest when it came out. Didn't like it cos it had too much of a different feel.
Eventually I realised it was closer to their live sound though.
But LIVE!!!! Underworld are second to none in the live dance act stakes imo.
Seen them loads of times and will always go see them if they're playing locally.

I only know Doot-Doot which was my absolute favourite track back then.Glassback wrote:Got the Freur CD now, with a couple of previously unreleaseds on it. Fantastic stuff, but a few of the tracks do now sound like music of it's time. Very very 80's.
How does the rest of their stuff compare to that?
Groet, Erik
Pop music delenda est.

A few tracks are pure genius while other tracks are pretty standard 80s fare.tetraplan wrote:I only know Doot-Doot which was my absolute favourite track back then.Glassback wrote:Got the Freur CD now, with a couple of previously unreleaseds on it. But, like Dubnobass, DootDoot itself was a stand-out piece of music imo.
I used to have the album back then, but it got nicked.
The CD's great just cos it's got the 12" version of DootDoot on it as one of the extra tracks.

FWIW I've worked on and off with these chaps for about 13 Years now and they are the nicest, most level-headed people I have ever met in the industry. They do so many cool things both as Underworld and as Tomato, and after the 1st generation Underworld they've always done everything on their own terms. A true inspiration in that alone.
If you're in anyway a fan, you'll love the next project too. Have to say though that my personal fave album is probably Beaucoup Fish.

Dave--it's so simple but what a cool sound--that lead chord in Born Slippy...is that a stock sound and if so from what...if not, how was it achieved? brilliance in simplicity!
