The only thing that inSIDious does that you can't do on the SID is set the volume levels of each individual channel. Other than that, inSIDious is exactly as limited as the real SID. If you keep the volume on each channel set to 15, you are basically using a real SID.Caine123 wrote: Thu Jul 16, 2020 8:13 am hey guys i dont know much about using the SID chip on real hardware, could you really also modulate and have different filters there too?
how do i need to use inSIDious (or what may i not use) to use it with only authenticity sound?
im just wondering what the original sid chips could do and what not.
In terms of modulation, the SID only has the volume ADSR in hardware. All other modulations are operated by the 6510 CPU in the C64. If you set the Clock parameter to 50Hz, that will restrict the modulation update speed in the same way as C64 games worked.

hi Caine, listening to the channels individually it is possible to identify all the different instruments that compose it ... for example in the ocean loader 3 on channel 1 we can identify at the beginning a saw rhythm followed by a low pulse with a very wide release ... proceeding in this way all the instruments are found ... once the song has been divided, I prepare all the presets ... on channel 1 of the ocean loader 3 I have found 12 different instruments (four of which are part of those toms that are heard from the second 24 to the second 27). Once everything is arranged it becomes "simple" to control everything through program changes into my daw. At 1.10 this is exactly what happens ... the program change that I entered at that point changes the preset by selecting the one I wantCaine123 wrote: Thu Jul 16, 2020 8:13 am
this is awesome! question with the c64 you normally had to programm every new sound seperately i think? cause at 1:10 min you change the FADE for channel 1 to get the sound different sounding.
I hope I have been clear but if you have problems ask well

zircon i found something annoying in inSIDious sadly, while tuning some knobs with the mouse and playing the same time it DOESNT get recognised. you have to get of the mouse and then it is replayed if you re-it the keyboard to play :/ it should be hearable in realtime.
also please add mousewheel support for changing the values
so basically 1 instance of inSIDIOUS (3 tones) is what a sid chip could do? do you know maybe if the old sid music was also used like some presets in inSIDious? i saw some presets already like this one which has all 3 channels active. normally didnt the musicians use only 1 channel per instrument or did they also combine all 3 for 1 sound e.g. lead? this way they could only play the lead afaik.

, cause afaik the SID music could only play 3 sounds at the same time so you had to trick in the past to not play the same sound if you wanted different sounds with others. and i work normaly 1 instance for each instrument so i think with your 12 different instruments i would have 12 instances inSIDious, which is more cpu consuming

but it can be done without problems ... you know, Lman used 19 InSIDious instances in his demo song and Zircon used more than 20 ... there will certainly be a higher consumption of the CPU but not so excessiveCaine123 wrote: Thu Jul 16, 2020 6:34 pm

Mike (the creator of the plugin) is working on a series of tutorials showing inSIDious in far greater detail than our high-level overview. Starting with part 1, the wave selector. For those who want a deeper dive w/ plenty of audio examples, here you go!

hey come on guys dont sleep on it i really dont like some small nitpicks like i stated due to NI's old cumbersome code but this vst is great!

lovely i hope he continues the series and presents more tricks and some recreations!zircon wrote: Thu Jul 16, 2020 8:16 pm Mike (the creator of the plugin) is working on a series of tutorials showing inSIDious in far greater detail than our high-level overview. This is an excellent ensemble!zircon wrote: Wed Jul 15, 2020 4:18 pm If you are hungry to learn even more details and specifics, we'll be sharing videos from Mike Clarke - the creator himself - that delve deep into each section of the synth.

If the dev is reading I have a few questions.
1. Are the combined waves really generated, or does inSIDious use samples for them?
Just curious because I didn't know that anyone ever found out how the SID chip actually created combined waveforms accurately.
2. I noticed that the combined Saw & Triangle waves harmonic content is affected by the pulse width slider. I thought only the Pulse wave, and waves combined with the Pulse wave were affected?
Thank you

The mechanism of the waveform generation has actuallly been known for sometime now. However, when I used generated waves they just somehow didn't sound right to me. That might have just been my personal bias because it didn't sound like my own real SID chips. The waveform generation on the 6581 is affected by a hardware bug, so none of them sound identical. You get only minor variations between chips apart from a few weird outlier chips like one I've got where the Tri+Saw is one octave lower.TokyoDisco wrote: Tue Jul 21, 2020 8:04 am 1. Just curious because I didn't know that anyone ever found out how the SID chip actually created combined waveforms accurately.
On top of that, doing real-time generation of the waveforms leads to aliasing at high frequencies without doing a load of oversampling and/or filtering, which is a fair amount of extra CPU for no audible gain.
And so, the combined waves have been sampled from my SID chips and processed to create wavetables across the frequency range.
You're right. The Saw + Triangle shouldn't be affected by the Pulse Width. That wil be resolved in the next update. Thanks for pointing it out.TokyoDisco wrote: Tue Jul 21, 2020 8:04 am 2.
