Despite having arranging, automation, FM synthesis, downloadable sample packs, many effects, and more, Caustic seems like a novelty app. It's piano roll, while functional, is a pain to use. Switching between edit and move mode and having to scroll with the scroll-bar and switching between screens really kills the creativity. You trade off ease of use for the novelty of looking like a rack mounted setup.

Does any of you actually use Caustic to produce music, or is it just for fun?

Hello mj21000hello. I use Caustic for fun and for fun making music. I got it a couple of months ago, after Roland gave away thier big app. The Roland one was a nightmare to use on the phone, with horrible playback. So I tried others and found them all similar use wise. Caustic seemed well optimized for my phone and works so smoothly.

Sure it can be fiddly but with a bit of time it becomes more fluid. I use a small usb keyboard/controller that simply plugs in and works. It was painless to map transport/record/synth parameters etc to the keyboard. Everything is remembered so this can speed up things. My playing is ok so I dont have a lot of midi editing to do. This is a pain when needed though.

Here is my first Caustic track. All stock Caustic.

I approached the user experience as an enjoyable challenge on top of the regular music making process. I am working on a few more tracks, but certainly wouldnt want to work this way only.

I have most of the other daws on ipad and keep coming back to Caustic. It’s very solid and versatile. After a short while it’s also very quick to get around in the program. It suits anyone who likes a linear approach.
