I can highly recommend the syrup filter as well, sounds great and very versatile (I had the chance to put it through its paces on the beta). I think this will now be my ‘go to’ filter in VA.

I picked that up this tonight, really sounds good. I thought I had CPU issues with it before I realised I had three different instances of VM on the go in my DAW. I need to test some DAWs against each other to find out which plays nicest with VM.
VCV Rack has a really handy per module CPU display, would be really useful to troubleshoot roadblocks.

Been playing with the miRack port of VCV Rack to iPad and the Mutable Instruments units like Marbles and Braids are so good. IIRC they’re open source so has anyone already ported them to VM under a different name?

the modules are programmed in java, for VM.
mutable instruments is C++, except ripples (and others probably, ripples is hardware). so porting isn't that easy.

Interesting. If it involves a lot of pointer and direct memory mapping code then it’d perhaps be harder to do a direct port due to Java going out of its way to make that sort of thing harder for developers to use. I keep meaning to stick my toe in the water as I’m a programmer with far too many years experience though I’ve never done much with either Java or C++. If this had come up at the start of lockdown and I was one of the people who couldn’t carry on working it would have been the perfect side hustle project.

You know, everyone moaned at the beginning that Softube Modular would turn into a money pit, which it hasnt as theyre slow to release modules.

Voltage on the other hand, those guys have a nice business model of regular new module releases but at reasonable prices

I prefer VCV prices (who wouldn’t?), but yeah most VM releases are reasonably cheap and I doubt the module developers are doing backstroke in a pool of gold coins.

Demoed the Benard vol 1 bundle and very unimpressed that the vast majority of the presets require several modules from their other bundles to work. $130 and still haven’t a clue how the modules work, the descriptions are very sketchy and seem to require you to have a good idea what they do so I’ll pass on those for now even though they’re supposed to be decent and I was particularly interested in the generative modules.

So my best purchase this weekend was $30 for the VCV Rack VST host pack and now I can do the generative stuff in VCV rack and use VM modules to play back the notes.

VCV Rack is superb, but you can soon drop a few bucks on the better modules (practically those by the Dev) like any other system. VA does have some different and superb modules by the developer for very reasonable prices, such as the new FM bundle (19 bucks), vintage synths band vector bundle. The 'VST hosting' modules are quite advanced in VA and included in the core product of about 100+ quality modules (Voltage Modular Core + Electro Drums, I paid 80 bucks) as well as a few other you would have to buy for VCV.

thing is with any of them, you dont have to buy everything!
yeah, nice to have the extra choices if you can afford them. but as in the hardware realm, choosing the right modules is key.
the bonus in software is, you dont need to buy the module again if you think "ooh id like two of those in my rack".
hardware module manufacturers take note!

With the exception of Softube Modular, which has a release rate dripping in molasses, all these front patched modular platforms are maturing now and I enjoy using all of them (at growing expense!). Each has its strengths.

I prefer to work standalone and VCV is the most complete in that respect. I prefer using the MindMeld Mixers over any of those in my DAWs. However, I have spent more time in Voltage Modular of late because its workflow is so good and I love some of the modules. Good to see Reaktor Blocks has now opened up and it is a thing of beauty even if the interface is too small.

The only problem is not enough hours in the day.

oh yeah don’t get me wrong I’ve bought quite a few VM packs so far, pretty much all the CA and PSP ones and I’m happy with how VM’s offerings are growing. But, you can pick up something like 500+ free modules in VCV now so, best of both worlds.

There is a feature of the VST3 SDK that allow builds for this platform.

And the hardware platform is 'relatively' cheap, considering.

i think its one of the best software filters I've come across - love how you can crank up the resonance to achieve a very nice sounding self oscillation without the dreaded loudness drop or it breaking up.
