Yes, and I'm also aware this will be classified as a"no installer" disorder in the futureL-EctroBit wrote: Thu Aug 06, 2020 2:13 pmEvilD, I told you I'm not alone on this.mabian wrote: Thu Aug 06, 2020 1:55 pmSure, but a no installer version makes people like me happy...EvilDragon wrote: Thu Aug 06, 2020 6:54 am Having an installer reduces the possibility of PEBKAC error.![]()

Ok, I didn't want to leave this entertaining chat about installers without making a couple of things clear.
My intention has not been to create controversy around the subject, but as I said before making visible an opinion as a user of Surge, which I know other people share (I do not know if many or few) and I already did that.
The other point that I wanted to make clear is that I am one more among many, many others who are happy that you, the Surge Team, are in charge of this magnificent virtual instrument. You have done an excellent job so far and that deserves the highest recognition. Congratulations to the entire team, and I know EvilDragon that you are an important part of it and of course baconpaul. Go ahead (the installers issue is really secondary) and hopefully you will also be able to carry out other abandoned synths that deserve a chance.
Thanks also to the original developer of Surge for making it open source and in this way give new life to his creation.

Obviously you have to prioritize your development time, and this may not be worth it to you for the benefit of just a few people. Equally obvious, not everyone who would use a non-installer option is going to respond to this forum thread, so let's not pretend "3 people so far" is any kind of representative sample. Of course there will be more people out there with similar reasons for preferring a non-installer version, such as the already mentioned desire to have a portable production environment. As for me, the fewer opaque installers that I have to give administrative privileges to, the better. I am also happier to install something nicely self-contained so I can be more confident it won't be a hassle to uninstall if I end up not liking it, as well.

FWIW, once I have the DLLs and all other relevant files available, I would be happy to help in preparing the zip files for the no installer version...of course just for the official releases, not for every night or beta build
But I guess this sort of activity could also be automated somehow, in 2020...

Here's another option for people who don't want to execute installers: just unpack them, then place the files where you want.
https://github.com/Bioruebe/UniExtract2
This is a better option than just supplying the plugin binaries in a ZIP, because oftentimes we will also have content updates, and this is REALLY better handled through an installer.

It seems like the links to your slack channel (from the surge github website and the surge-synth-team website) are broken.. It gives a 'This link is no longer active' page.

No thanks, I much prefer having the folder ready... also, sometimes the installer content is encryptedEvilDragon wrote: Thu Aug 06, 2020 3:46 pm Here's another option for people who don't want to execute installers: just unpack them, then place the files where you want.

Ironically though, UniExtract2 is portable

Well Surge installer content is not encrypted and UniExtract unpacks it just fine. It's what you can do today as opposed to waiting for something that might not happen

I know that baconpaul updated those links the other day. Try refreshing the page with Ctrl+F5 so that it clears the cache?
