Yeah, all brands are equal quality. :dog:
Yeah, single examples are good proof for a brand's general quality. :dog:

Shall we proceed?

Apple's gotta suck BTW. A relative had a hardware failure on a MacBook after 4 months of use.

Yeah, come to a forum designed for users to share their experiences just to ignore them. :dog:
Doing nothing is only fun when you have something you are supposed to do.

Of course this can happen with any new computer, but it didn't work 'out of the box' and they would not exchange it. I have spent 6 hours of my own time trying to fix it following instructions from DELL support, now they have said its hardware I will loose a days work as they come to my house to replace the motherboard and SSD.

If they had just given me a new laptop and let me send this one back this one back I would not have had an issue, its having to go through all of this I hate, hence the vent.

Seems I am not alone.

I've used a good Dell, it was 3000€ workstation with 2k screen and Xeon. That beast could do anything I threw at it, but alas it was a work machine.
Quoting meself; It was a workstation LAPTOP... forgot that :P

I'm also in the market for a new laptop and have already put more than half a year of research on this task. Currently I'm leaning on going the same way I went 6 years ago.. Clevo/Sager custom configured stuff.

XMG seems to be the current most reliable dealer in Europe of this brand.. and they have their own audio guy who is at the moment going through the latest line of laptops to check for problems and suggest driver optimizations to the company. We'll see how it turns out..
How about scan audio? I think they ship to FI too?

Scan Audio doesn't have the latest laptops with AMD CPU support, thus making them uninteresting to me. Other than that, yes they seem to ship to Finland. Not sure I want to deal with any UK based company at the moment though.. with Brexit and all. Could become a real hassle. XMG is in Germany.

Not so much choice when it’s a work laptop!

I built my audio DAW PC myself (a dive water cooled tower beast) but the Dell is very small and light for a business/travel laptop.

Anyway, they changed the motherboard and SSD yesterday and I spent the evening upgrading windows and drivers (again!), no crashes today, so fingers crossed...Homely that’s also fixed the high DPC latency, but the main thing is it doesn’t fall over!

i never buy anything else

if you career depends on it, sure, get a "specialised unit" but in general, a decent spec off the shelf unit will do the job very well....

do plenty of research into what you buy

You'll have a bugger of a time getting your hand on AMD processor laptops this generation around in general, Intel has clearly paid off many, many vendors to completely or almost completely use Intel 10th gen processors. Unless you absolutely need a laptop right now, I'd wait until late 2020/early 2021 when Zen 3 gets around and laptop makers will hopefully have no choice but to include AMD CPU's.

No problems getting AMD from a retailer like XMG who makes custom laptops based on the various Clevo chassis. It's laptop motherboard allows you to simply plop in a desktop Ryzen in there. :)

For instance this one: https://www.xmg.gg/en/xmg-apex-15

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KFTMBTDGTx8

They also have an official reddit where people can ask questions directly to the developers. Some audio related questions can be found there.

https://old.reddit.com/r/XMG_gg/

It's a desktop replacement (meaning if you use it on battery you get like 45 minutes of running time.. so not really a "laptop" per say).

... or... maybe... it's actually the stuff people buy.

I know. Much more boring than a conspiracy.

No, Liero is correct. Intel has been extremely aggressive with their OEM vendors, putting all kinds of clauses against using AMD in a competing product. This is nothing new. They've been doing it for years.

Also, people actually WANT amd CPU's now. Just look at the current trends and how many AMD 4000 laptops are sold out. Everybody and their mother who knows even a little bit about processors want these laptops. Better performance, better built in GPU and better battery usage.. and at the moment, still better price point (this will change). It's a quadruple win.
