Hey folks. New here, so: Hello!

As the title- Is there a software to specifically
create a chord progression from midi melody?

I was hoping to input my midi melody and have it suggest chord progressions that match hopefully including jazz styles?

Cheers

Nate

Strange, just the same question today, so I cant help but be very interested in any possible solutions, especially as vst or something thats (maybe) already inside mixcraft pro/melodyne.

Ah thanks. Here's hoping!

As I was looking mainly for a vst/inside daw (mainly mixcraft) solution I as well did a more open google search and if you dont mind standalone I find one relatively new thing where I downloaded the demo but have not installed/tried out (14 days demo, different versions with different prizes) that might be interesting for you. It is called "Bandora":

https://bandora.com/

I added the link only cause google will drive you to search for "bondora" :-). For now I dont know if its just b..... or worth a try but it sounds like it might be a solution for this even if only the really highprized version will give you all the freedom you might need and for that money you get something like orb composer which does ALL......planning to try out the demo this weekend, if I make it I will add some notes in here.

Should have better done the search on my PC first :-).

Realized how many old stuff I already had that does this well. But dont know if this would be of any help cause most was never develloped further.

This is mainly standalone, so Scaler 2 as vst will be best solution inside daw I think, have not tried it so far but thanks for the tip.

The old ones standalone:

- Ludwig 3, dont know if you can still buy it, has not been develloped since a lot of years, there was even a boxed version when I buy it (german product). This is still great and I would think maybe the most accurate (they develloped the first chess software):
http://www.komponieren.de/

- Athtek Digiband, not develloped since 2013, dont know if you can still buy, my license does not work anymore since upgrade from win 7 to win 10, was a great easy to use tool, really dont know why they stopped develloping but it seems they have other focus now

EZkeys can do chord recognition but wont give you accompaniement.

One of the most recent is Odesi which now has been replaced with Captain plugins (dont know if the plugins could do this as well).

Thanks for the detailed response. I'll check those out. Really helps! Cheers Nate.

Can Scaler2 accompany (play the suggested chords to an imported midi melody at the same time?)

Or does it just show the chords on screen

Not the cheapest option, but a VERY powerful one, with great support right here on KVR:

From the Scaler product description here:
Detect

Scaler 2 can listen to incoming MIDI or audio data and detect the key your music is in. After this, it will suggest chords and chord progressions that will fit with your song. Scaler 2 can send MIDI to a virtual instrument in your DAW, and it has 30 onboard instruments to play with as well.

Great, I have bought this felt decades ago but cant make my voice "clear" (I think the prof. word is "intonation" :-) ) enough to get use of it. Now that I have thought about it in this context serial long gone, so great to have this option. I never tried with a virtual audio cable (will look how much that efford would take) so that might open up new dimensions.

Again one of the old and nearly forgotten ones, seems for me sometimes like the Electric cars, first, in the early twenties if I remember right, and now back and "modern" as could be a century later......

It takes a bit of time to set up, as you can't simply import a MIDI or audio file. You have to use a virtual audio cable and record your melody into it. The included "styles" are pretty cheesy, but for creating chord progressions for melodies it works surprisingly well sometimes.

They don't sell it currently, but the academic edition is available as a free download from here:
https://aka.ms/songsmith-for-teachers

You may only use it for academic purposes, of course. ;)
It's cool that Songsmith is still available, but I wish I could find the original Blue Ribbon Soundworks stuff from the early 90's that it directly evolved (devolved?) from (SuperJAM!, etc).

I downloaded Scaler 2 and was looking at the PB deal, then thought, I'll take a look at RapidComposer.

Amazing. Scaler 2 is very good but this is extraordinary.
