It sounds a lot but it very quickly adds up.

2x Virus @ 6 each is 12 already
Nord is 4
Then that only leaves 8 stereo pairs so I’m already restricting the hardware going into it.

Oh and Fk!!! Just thought of external FX so I could easily go much higher than 32.

You're probably going to get more people responding to that sort of question on Gearslutz. I don't necessarily mean you'll get better answers, just more of them. ;-)

yeah thats what im saying, you need a lot

especially if youd like "live playback" with individual inputs.

mixer that remembered states would be good (or with motorised faders and midi) but then you couldnt record individual channels and do the mix hardware.
:ud:

Yep will do. It was more of just a fleeting comment when I initially posted. Lots more research to be done.

I have a feeling it’s going to get very expensive very quickly. As I said, lots more research to be done.

on gs you get "only 4k?"

Thanks WtG, will check the MOTU. I do remember them not playing nice on PC though so need to check if that’s changed.

Very true. That will be the answer with certainty.

RME is expensive for analog I/O because most of their converters support high sample rates. You really don't need 32 channels of 192 kHz to record multiple outputs from a Virus running at 48 kHz! ADAT is significantly cheaper than MADI, and a RayDAT should be able to do that many channels at 48 kHz, or fewer channels at 96k if the converters support it.

I don't think there's a cheap route to "literally hundreds", in that case you are indeed looking at something like MADI, or MOTU's expandable system.

Ok this is good news. The MADI angle was thrown to me by Gearslutz. Surprise surprise.

I'm currently using a MOTU16a, with a Lynx Aurora16 for 32 Inputs and Outputs. But since I have the Aurora connected via ADAT, I could only go up to 48k, without losing I/Os. I have 2 projects coming up, for which I will need to work at 96k, so an upgrade is required.
I'm in the process of switching to a Dante setup with a Focusrite Red 8Pre, a Rednet A16r and a Neve 1073OPX. This will give me 42 Inputs and 36 outputs, which can all run at up to 192k.

Mushy, I would definitely recommend looking at the available Dante options, as there are quiet a few affordable I/O boxes with tons of I/O. Tascam makes a 32 channel 1u A/D D/A for around $2k USD. The nice thing about Dante, is how easily expandable it is. And unlike MOTU AVB interfaces, they don't require a proprietary switch and I will be able to easily integrate converters from other brands, so I can switch out the A16r for a Burl Mothership or a newer Lynx interface.

^^ The Kodamo EssenceFM looks pretty sweet, some guys over at GS are trying to get him
to build a rack sampler and I guess he's somewhat open to the sampler idea.

*I'm trying to get Dave Derr to make a Eurorack Distressor, he's also somewhat open
to the idea. :o

Post

Yeah, that's me trying to get him to build a sampler
