I'm sure it will be kept going. It's a core NI instrument and a lot of people use it. Even if there is no obvious update i.e. FM9, it will always need to be kept up to date in terms of compatibility with new OS etc. Which is why they really ought to make and release FM9 - then at least they would make some money off it and be in a position to call FM8 a legacy instrument with an option to stop ensuring compatibility. Same for Absynth I guess.

HI
Interestingly a thread came up recently about producing a 'reverb' VST - what struck me (not that I wasn't aware of it anyway) was just how time consuming development is - not to say skilled and by default expensive.
I am sure if a developer commented here on the 'logistics and cost' of substantially updating an old piece of software we would be talking a lot of money - I also imagine that a new team would have to be appointed to such a task and I also suspect that working through 'old' code is an absolute nightmare - which makes the whole thing even more time consuming.

Aye, it's probably the reason a lot of older vsts just don't get updated - the original developers have moved on. And if anyone has tried to disentangle someone else's code, you will know how difficult it is. In most cases, it may be like having a piece of land with an old house on it - it may actually be more efficient and cost effective to tear it down and build a brand new house from scratch.original flipper wrote: Wed Aug 19, 2020 9:12 pm HI

FM synthesis is always hot. I'm sure they're debating bloating it with wavetable support or something like that but even just a refresh of the gui with upgraded effects (configurable like serum) would be huge.

I mean there's definitely a niche and a market for it, I think. It could be the last 'big synth' I can't imagine anything else, considering the level soft synths have got to these days.functionform wrote: Thu Aug 20, 2020 2:25 pm FM synthesis is always hot. An fm8 patch ,where more sounds exist in the morph square can't be ported to dx7.Doc Brown wrote: Thu Aug 20, 2020 4:01 pm How hard is it to port a patch in fm8 to Arturia's dx7 v? I don't own it yet but I like their version and I'm not sure what direction NI is going.
just the simplest patches could be ported.
in fm8 there are several special features that makes it a unique instrument.
I mainly prefer classic fm sounds, so for me dexed is enough. but if fm8 used with its special features, it can be quite hard to recreate its sound in another fm synth.

probably a matter of doing them from scratch.Doc Brown wrote: Thu Aug 20, 2020 4:01 pm How hard is it to port a patch in fm8 to Arturia's dx7 v? I don't own it yet but I like their version and I'm not sure what direction NI is going.
I don't think FM8 is going to be discontinued. NI got rid of a lot of software years ago, but they've been adamant that the current line up isn't going anywhere. I would imagine the worst case scenario would be that Massive v1 stays a Universal Binary 2 Rosseta 2 AU plug in, and doesn't make it to VST on the new Apple Silicon macs, but that's about it for plug ins getting hosed from NI these days. (Hardware is another story, they've more recently stopped developing drivers for depreciated hardware.)
