Hi All!

Working on a song and I get the feeling this song isn't 4/4 timing. When I try to loop it, it seems to not loop in time, I have to increase the length of the first note of the bass to get it sitting right.

Here is a clip of the bass and drums so you get what I mean.

Thanks!

it's in 4/4, there is no problem. You seem to be thrown by the bass syncopation a 16th ahead of ONE. Which isn't that unusual. It isn't that convincingly done, there, but

4/4, ok thanks.

Need to look into syncopation. I'm no bass player nor drummer either. Everything done by ear.

If you put down a click track, you'll find the correct loop point.

The syncopation thing. Here's an excellent tutorial with a similar type idea to your own track.

Here's the original song.

This is the same method MJ used when he was working on Anthony Marinelli's Thriller.

Ahh so it's doing a bass line but sounding the notes on e and a of a 1e & a. It's a bit like in trance music how you sound the bass notes on the offbeats so if you went 1 & 2 & 3 & 4 with the numbers being the kick beats, sounding the bass on the &'s. Would that be classed as syncopation?

any emphasis not on the 'beat' (while there is still a pronounced beat, of course) is called syncopation. EG: the 16th before 1 is 'more' syncopated. ;)
Some definitions base on 'the strong beats', ie., 1 2 (3) 4 is syncopated.
