You can also encapsulate (group) the plugins in a Rack, then save and name that preset into a folder.
Then you can create any arbitrary system with tags in the names and folder structure, and put chosen folders into Places, to save steps when digging into a folder tree.
For M4L, I put all the amxd in existing subfolders inside the User Library, like User Library\Presets\Audio Effects\Max Audio Effect, then I dragged the "Max Audio Effect" folder into Places, to access it directly.
Also, tiny "tip", but on the left panel of Browser, with the Category names (Favorites, Sounds, Packs, etc.), once you get used to what is placed where (except Places stuff is all fixed), you can drag the divider and make it smaller instead of showing the full name. You can even collapse it into just icons, but my memory is bad for the folders I put in Places, so I leave the first 2 or 3 letters still showing.
For the Collections, they are color tags, you can use up to 3 in combinations, not just one.
For example, I set up red as just "Favorite", and the other colors as MIDI FX (orange), Instrument (yellow), Audio FX (green), M4L (blue), Samples (purple) and MIDI (gray).
So when I find a nice instrument, I tag it with Instrument (yellow). If I think it is actually not only nice, but great, a true favorite, then I tag it with Favorite (red) too.
Then when I just browsing and see red and yellow dots besides a name, I know it is a instrument and it is really good (for my tastes).
If I see red, yellow and blue, I know it is a great M4L instrument.
(EDIT: You can color tag/untag fast with numbers 1 to 7)
