why this sounds so beautiful and organic?
what is the secret behind this ?
I hear a drum groove , gated or sidechaned to another kick (muted) bassline layered with synth sound or whatever but it can't be not layerd with this powerful bassline and a pad in the background
I want people in this beautiful forum to share their opinions about this piece of art because
anything you notice that you think make this track powerful
it's like analysis to what is going on there :)

yeah, I've seen him live, good visuals, but the music became a bit annoying to be honest

there are a few acts around like this, i think it's the use of noise the really gets me after a while.....

i know a lot of ppl who love him, and it would normally be my cup of tea, but the noise.....

Do you mean white noise ? or you mean noise out of too much happening same time :D

white/filtered noise

Low pass filters, distortion, over-hyped low end. That's all I could make out in 4 seconds. Couldn't take anymore after that.
This is the same method MJ used when he was working on Anthony Marinelli's Thriller.

I thought that's shakers and it's part of the drum groove

What i am actually wondering about is the video. This looks to me like a rather professionally shot and edited video, not the “let’s put the band in a room and let them pretend to play” kind of cheaply made stuff. Sure, video shoots most likely have become way cheaper since the eighties or nineties, but even if some buddy of yours would do you a favor I guess that you don’t get this for like 1000 bucks or so.
Would really like to know how much it costs to produce such a video and if there is that much money in music like this - to which a good old A&R manager would’ve said “but where’s the single?” - to make it worth.

I think it's a low budget video however, it's very good

its just one bloke, and that was a big single (4 years ago?)

Disorganised drums.
Very noisy poor quality drums (probably deliberate, sadly).
I don't hear any layering on the bass - just boosted + distortion.
I almost like the vibe of the track, but in terms of quality - sounds poor to me.

This is the problem (and the answer) :hihi:

There is sidechain, there is beauty... Different beasts. Absolutely.

I normally like distorted, lo-fi stuff (think Boards of Canada). But to me the overall sound-design of this song is just... oppressive. Too gritty/grungy/nasty, or something... I'm not sure exactly what it is.
A well-behaved signature.

I like very much Jon Hopkins' stuff.
The steady, noisy but melodic pads seem to be a constant in his tunes

I used to like Jon Hopkins. His first two albums especially. But his last three or so seem to be the same album, same song structures, rhythms, synth sounds, same effects (lots of distortion), even similar album structures. I think he needed a rest maybe, as he seemed to have run out of ideas. Just my opinion though. He was a big fan of Soundtoys Decapitator, if I remember rightly
