I play guitar but prefer hearing synth and virtual instruments

Hi. I'm getting back into music after a bit of a break. I played guitar mostly, and keyboards on and off. I'd rather play guitar, and I'd rather hear synth and virtual instruments, but I haven't found a set-up that plays like even an un-plugged electric guitar. Does anyone have any ideas?

This is a road I went down for many years. I don’t prefer synths to guitars, but I do love them and the variety of sound that can be gotten from them. The problem is, all hex pickup stuff and Starrlabs style controllers just seemed to suck. If there’s a good one, I’ve not found it. Anyway, a few years ago my wife got me a Roli Rise 49 and it changed my life. Takes some practice, but you end up with the same sort of feeling that you’re “touching” the instrument in a way that keyboards don’t quite give. I still use a standard keyboard a lot too, but the Roli was totally worth the money and effort that went into learning it. It’s not a guitar like experience, but it gives you a similar, if not better, expressive experience.

I don’t have one (been toying with the idea of getting one ), but what about the Roger Linn Design Linnstrument? As everything needs some practice, but the layout seems like it makes sense to a guitar player. It is of course not cheap.
There is a thread about it here on the KVR expert forum.

This. The LinnStrument is an excellent controller and has a layout similar to a guitar. I would definitely recommend this approach over a MIDI guitar, which would always be an imperfect playing experience.

I could think of 100 better sounding ways to spend a grand.

I agree wholeheartedly. There are expressive techniques beyond guitar. Both the roli and the linnstrument facilitate a greater deal of expression than one could achieve via a guitar like controller or pitch to midi. Yes there is a learning curve either way you go but if you are locked into the grid layout that the guitar offers then you'll do better with a linnstrument.

Hm, I’d forgotten about that. I bought it and I couldn’t get it working correctly. Sent multiple messages to support and never heard back. Maybe I should give it a go again.

Here's one I prepared earlier==>
https://www.sendspace.com/pro/dl/hg40ln
It can take a couple of initializes before the streams open properly,
just reload or hit clear

It uses a regular ts guitar,
I use an untilted humbucker in bridge position
The synth plays pretty good, but the MIDI out is still experimental-
it works choppy and uses a lot of cpu-the midi

for Windows(VST2,VST3, x86,x64)

It's a fantastic software. Not updated in a long time as far as I can tell but if it works, it works. I discovered today that It can also be used to convert guitar loops to MIDI. My purchase came with the bass version of the software too, which is nice to have.

There's a good review @ Sound on Sound.

I too found that JamOrigin MIDI works magical,
I like trying to do it myself though for interest's and creation's sake
JO say that their app will never be perfect though-
I believe it can be done workably/practically perfectly though, with some latency

Hi. Thank you for the ideas. The Linnstrument does unique things...but...my expression comes from picking, maybe a little vibrato in my fretting finger, sometimes a step or two slide like a pick-up note, and letting the sound die out until I stop it or it goes below hearing. I need something that takes the basic expression of a picked guitar, adding a long acoustic instrument-like decay. The SYN-1000 seems to do the first part with the tone used at 6:12 in the video. What do you think?
