One: Any need to actually install ST1 L at all before installing ST2? (I am going to be doing a clean install of XP then loading vsts from scratch, so if not needed to have 1 installed.... ) I am thinking no on this and just install/register ST2XL???

absolutly no need for ST1 at all. Just install your ST2 XL, then register it. After you're done, download the latest version from your sampletank user area and install it and you'll be ready to rock.
ST2 XL has all the sounds from your ST1, the only reason you'd need it installed is for backwards compatibility with your older projects that used it.
You can change the color with the 3 little knobs that are on the right side of ST2's screen. Have fun
