2020 a year in gear (what have you/are you bought/buying?)

I just bought a Sequential Ob-6 and then came to the realization that I don’t have enough interface inputs anymore. I have a Focusrite Scarlett Octopre on the way now: I would have picked up the Behringer ADA8200 but it wasn’t in stock at Musicians Friend. They’re financing the Ob-6 too. I have like, 4 years to pay off the Ob-6 interest free. I plan on paying off faster, but it’s nice to know.

I bought an Elektron Model:Samples this year and I love it! A serious sequencer for a reasonable amount Of money.

Here's a pic of a very err, original pedalboard hehe.
It currently resides between my Moog DFAM and my DAW.
- Harley Benton Spaceship 50C (pedalboard)
- Harley Benton Iso2 Pro (power supply)
- Mosky D250X (overdrive / distortion)
- Proco Rat 2 (versatile distortion)
- Harley Benton (Joyo) California Sound (amp sim)
- Mooer Mod Factory Mk II (mod)
- Valeton Wave Shaker (tremolo)
- Mosky Loop Box (loop switch box - enables me to bypass the next device:)
- Korg Monotron Delay (delay)
- Harley Benton patch cables; 2 jack-to-minijack adapters
Haven't velcro'ed the little green and purple pedals, it's a work in progress

just got a fully maxed S6000 with all the cards etc but bust screen locking. It's basically going to be a transfer to max out my current S5000 and some spare bits like LCD and power supply.

Another weekend DIY project!
Doboz VCO340. This is a CEM3340-based VCO, where the designer has added a bunch of extra waveshaping options based on the triangle output. I had been itching for a "proper analog VCO" and thought a pair of these would make an excellent complex oscillator due to their capability for linear FM, hard sync and audio-rate waveshape modulation.
This was probably the most difficult build I've done due to the dense layout, need to source parts (there is no kit option) and a lot of unusual resistor values. Still, after a day of slow and careful assembly they worked first time! A bit more calibration to go, but initial pitch calibration seems very promising.
There's not very much info online so maybe I should do a proper review after spending some time with them

I sprung for a Shelves (the voltage-controlled EQ, not furniture to put gear on). That means I'll have only 2HP of empty space in my rack, and there aren't really any 2HP modules I want.
I've been thinking about the Twisted Electrons MegaFM, but I think I have at least temporarily talked myself out of it after another couple of noisy sessions with Akemie's Castle.

Next, you need to get a shelf to put your Shelves on!foosnark wrote: Thu Sep 03, 2020 9:51 pm I sprung for a Shelves (the voltage-controlled EQ, not furniture to put gear on).

Bought my first actual dedicated eurorack mixer, I like these guys, nice stuff
and not too expensive imo, also it was on sale soon after being released.
Modular is often opposite to plugins in that regard, interestingly.

I bought several this year! It is rare I buy hardware, but this year i bought and sold several units.
-Yamaha MODX 6 (Excellent, no regrets, only the keybed is not very good. Thin and it seems easily to break).
- Push 2 .Excellent quality, but I'm struggling with finger drumming
- Mini Brute 2 (Build quality is excellent, but not sure now that I really feel a difference from some software analogue! I mean I don't play extreme notes or maximum resonance ...etc! Anyway, I'm keeping it for a while and see.
- Artutia MK II 49 keys midi controller. Still waiting for it.
I sold my nektar P4 and Casio PX-5S. I might sell Push 2 and MiniBrute 2 later. Anyway, I feel that MODX 6 and Arturia MK II will be with me for a long time. Actually, I only need those two with my DAW and several other soft synths like Diva or RePro

I don't know on the Minibrute, but Microbrute had some nice saturation and you could get some instability with that filter that didn't really sound like software tends to IMHO. Overall I found it pretty inspiring, and it eventually led me down the modular rabbit hole.
...
And now I just bought another Arturia synth, the Microfreak this time. The idea is to replace my Reface CS, which I haven't been using as much lately. Reface has been fun to jam with but not all that relevant to the music I'm making. 0-Ctrl showed me I really like touchplate keyboards with pressure, so this is more of that, only with MIDI and also basically Plaits inside. The arp/sequencer does seem pretty nifty too.
I was kind of torn between grabbing that or a Model:Cycles. I ignored it when it came out, since I was thinking of it as a groovebox... but also it's an FM synth, and I love me some FM. There's a small subset of people using it as an ambient machine who say it's brilliant for that. I might get one once I see how the Microfreak settles in.

MiniBrute2 has the Brute Factor which is a feedback that makes very nice results. MB2 has many modulations as well, which is interesting. Microfreak looks interesting as well, but I don't think I want to buy another hardware synth. Simply I don't have any more place!
