when your recording vocals do you allocate (in your host) a stereo channel to record to or a mono channel..what do the pros do and what differences does it make?

hi..this maybe a bit of a daft question but bare with me:-)

I try to keep mono sources mono. Mainly cos the vocal vst effects are usually mono.

yep..me too..but i was just thinking that if you recorded vocals in stereo theres obviously more scope for playing with effects..which i have done but i just wanted to know what pros tend to do..if what im doing is generally accepted as being stupid:-)

Remember that if it's a stereo channel/track or not... it's still mono.
I'm just used to using sends for my vocal and guitar "ambience" effects so the original source could be either or.
The only other advantage is disk space, if I use guitar rig and record 57 tracks (I was bored) in stereo at 24bit 48khz the old hard drive starts getting a lil nervous.

There's no point in recording vocals in stereo unless you're getting somthing uniqe in each channel (different mic positions, etc.). For effects you can always aplly stereo effects to a mono signal. In some hosts you may have to rout the vocal track into a stereo group.

..57 tracks in mono here would seriously cause problems...nevermind stereo.ok..so mono is the norm..cheers.

mono recording also makes it easier to keep the vocal centered. record with two mics and you'll see what i mean as the voice wanders (subtly, yet noticeably) from one to the other.

It depends if you want to get the room characeristic sith your voice. If you wan the more neutral sound, record the voice and the guitar mono.
If you are in a space room and want to keep his sound, record it stereo, with a stereo mic, or with a MS type.
