Hi,

I am about to cancel my Slate All Access Pass and heading for new shores. I am focusing on high quality EQ/COMP for mixing/mastering.

Which one would you use/prefer in terms of quality?

1) SSL (10 plugins):
The SSL Native 'Complete Bundle' includes: X-EQ2, ChannelStrip, (Updated) Bus Compressor, FlexVerb, Drumstrip, VocalStrip, X-Saturator, X-Comp, X-ValveComp and X-Phase, and is available on monthly subscription from $14.99/mo via Gobbler

2) Plugin Alliance (nearly 100 plugins - most of them are needless):
85+ Mixing & Mastering Plugins + FX plugins (although I am not in need of FXs), the same monthly subscription costs, USD 14.99

I already demoed Plugin Alliance, like the bx_console SSL and the bx_digital V3 and will try SSL too.

Since I am not an expert I need your advise. Is there anyone who knows both bundles?

Thank you.

Best
Mike

I'd go for the SSL personally, which will give you fewer, more useful plugins (IMHO) that you can learn inside out.

The Plugin Alliance bundle will give you some good stuff but inevitably far more than you need and have time to learn. Plus their plugins go on sale for silly prices regularly if you want to buy them.

Maybe consider buying a separate compressor and eq and get to know them really well and how they affect the sound. Or even better, use the built in effects in your DAW; the big hitters generally have very good quality ones. I don't really understand the mentality of subscriptions though so I may not be the best to advise!

I think it depends on where you are in your music making too. If you're just starting, I can't really see the point of such subscriptions as what you reference is certainly for after a track has been 'put together', and so better for experienced users/studios etc.

Thanks for your input, @andymcbain and @leeleema.

Finally I made it a bit easier and went for a yearly subscription at SSL and Plugin Alliance. PA already sent me a voucher of USD 199.99. Nice, this can be used on black friday deals for those plugins I frequently use.

And SSL, well, let's see which package is it worth in the long term.

Good bye Slate, never got used to the VMR :/
