_gl wrote: Thu Sep 03, 2020 10:13 am Are GR5 presets 100% compatible and (as the old models haven't changed) sound identical?
EvilDragon already answered this question.
The answer is yes, because GR6 is installed as a a separate program so you'll still have GR5 for legacy.
That's not what I asked, I want to know if GR5 presets will sound correct in GR6? It may be convenient to use the new interface for old presets (as the old interface is buggy).

Who knows and who can answer that now? You have to wait until it's released. And what do you mean sound correct? It will of course sound better in mk6. I mean how many years ago was 5 released? Alot has happened in the amp sim world since then.

How will it sound better if the patch uses an old model which hasn't changed ?

Yeah. It won't. In another thread ED mentioned that there will be no options for switching HQ mode on or off. So, yes, the old modules will sound exactly the same if you kept GR in HQ mode.

Consider all the previous stuff as legacy processors. It's the new amps, effect processors and cabs that should sound quite different.

EvilDragon can, as he has links with NI.

This is correct.

_gl wrote: Thu Sep 03, 2020 10:13 amHave they kept all the Modifiers? Are there any new ones?
Yes. No.
_gl wrote: Thu Sep 03, 2020 10:13 amHave they kept all the collapsible advanced controls for the old modules (my favourite feature)? Do they have them for any new modules?
Yes. No, new amp models (and Mod/Crush Pack, Softube compressors etc.) are all single panel things that don't have hidden advanced controls.

Everything I imported from GR5 worked fine and, as mentioned, sounds as if GR5 was in HQ mode.

Great, thanks ED.

Shame there are no advanced controls on the new modules though, the reason why GR5 is my favourite amp sim is the extreme tweakability, great for creative as well as subtly unique sounds. Other sims usually go for the pedal approach ("here's two knobs, what more do you want") which I find super-dull.

ICM only models how the amp is actually wired. Old models were much more "liberal", less "literal", so to speak, with those extra parameters.

Speaking of ICM:
Sci-fi by name, but incredibly realistic by nature. Native’s newly developed circuit modeling process uses cutting-edge machine learning technology to reproduce the behavior of hardware devices from the ground up, giving a whole new level of depth and realism to our amp emulations. Even better, it means we’ll be working with the community to discover new hardware and bring it to GUITAR RIG 6 PRO with regular updates.

What exactly does that mean? Is it a fancy way of saying that they are using some newfangled profiling technology?
Even if the piano player can't play, keep the party going.

If they're using machine learning then it probably means they have a bunch of input parameters (e.g. knob positions or mic positions on the modelled amp) and a bunch of expected outputs (something like audio files produced from recording the original amp with those settings) and the machine learning system will loop round and keep attempting to tweak its settings to produce the best matches. It's kind of like an infinite number of monkeys on typewriters getting closer and closer to writing Hamlet. Over time the machine 'learns' an approach, but unlike in the past where there'd have been an algorithm (equation with one or more steps involved) initially from a human with machine learning we can't really reproduce exactly how the machine gets the results it does (because of the sheer amount of toing-and-froing involved), just that it does.

TLDR - you know that bit in Endgame where Dr Strange calculates the 14 million ways they lose to Thanos and the one way they defeat him? It's like that, but Dr Strange is a computer and defeating Thanos is getting a more authentic amp sound.

Are you safe?

It is patent pending. I am pretty sure they can't do that if it they were using newfangled profiling technology.

"Patent pending" doesn't really tell me much. You can apply for a patent for anything, and in the time it takes for them to figure out that it's not worthy, the patent is still pending. And a lot of things that aren't really patent-worthy have received patents.

There's no reason why they might not have applied for a patent if ICM was the next generation of profiling. Applying for a patent is not that expensive and if they get it, that would be a cheap way to get credibility.

Backwards compatibility is always a problem for most new plugins. It's not usually the presets, though, mostly its the plugin itself. For example, if you delete Guitar Rig 5 from your system and install version 6 instead, the DAW won't magically replace GR 5 with GR 6 plugins and restore the settings. In alot of cases, you can't even use your DAW's capacity to copy the old settings across to an instance of the new plugin as there's a good chance that even that won't be compatible.

This has been a persistent problem with upgrades across the years, unfortunately. The only exception to this, that I'm aware of is Waves. Say what people will about them, backwards compatibility is one of the things they get right. That's why they're still popular amongst the studios that have been around a while.

Unfortunately, the best way I can think of to transition from Guitar Rig 5 to 6 is to keep everything installed and go around manually replacing every instance of 5 with 6 by hand. Then deactivate 5, but keep it on the system if you can, just in case. Give copy and paste a try though, as it does work sometimes and you never know your luck.
