Goodbye Roland Cloud

Not a mistake. This quaint old man knows what cellphones are capable of. To each his own. I prefer a recorder to record because it doesn't require a monthly payment. Phones are distractions & I prefer a small tablet for my calendar & various apps. The screen is a bit bigger than a cell phone & friends know to DM me instead of trying to call or text

So anyhoo. Yea. That Roland Cloud. Not a fan of that set up either & there are so many options these days I'm just not that drawn to emulations of old hardware

I think its cool you're doing things your own way. And dedicated tools are generally better. Also back in the day, there were no smart phones and the music wasn't exactly bad. Plus, you don't have google tracking your own thought and movement!melomood wrote: Sun Sep 06, 2020 2:06 am So anyhoo. Yea. That Roland Cloud. DRM is never a good position for the paying customer to be in. The two worst forms of Copy Protection being Online Activation and Challenge Response.
ALWAYS ON and Dongles by the way too
(If I remember right Propellerheads Reason got such a system both )
You can authorize Reason in one of three ways: dongle, online-verfication, machine-registration (so it's basically the same as iLok, which offers the exact same three options too (regardless of which of these any given vendor chooses and supports)).

The last cracked version of Reason was version 5.leeleema wrote: Fri Sep 04, 2020 8:50 pmAye, get rid. That sounds totally ridiculous, so you can't use what you have paid for if you're not connected to the internet? You can bet illegal versions don't have that so it is basically punishing legit buyers and not even using an alternative protection system like pretty much every single other company is just lazy.briefcasemanx wrote: Fri Sep 04, 2020 3:57 am Reason 11 suite constantly says I need to access the internet to sign in even after I installed their invasive spyware so I wouldn't have to be always connected. Garbage.
Support companies/plugins that use serials like u-he.
Every other "alternative protection system" has been cracked so it appears that Reason has made the correct choice for themselves.
I own Reason 11 Suite and it takes me an extra second to login, a box flashes on screen with my login details already filled in and i press the enter key. I understand why they do it and i love reason so the longer they can afford to stay in business by using their protection software then i happy for them and me.
Edit: And also the Reason Rack vst sign's itself in automatically when you open it in another Daw, so no waiting around there either.
Mac mini m4 pro, Reaper, too many plugins, Modal Argon8, Novation Circuit Mono Station and now a lovely Waldorf Blofeld.

And if you work on a music PC not connected to the internet, then what?

Then you are one of those KVR oddballs who never update their OS, who never update their plugins, and who can't even install plugins from vendors which use a plugin manager for activation of their plugins.

Oh, and you can't comment on KVR about it either then. Tough luck.

Hardware synths have their own issues, but DRM isn't one of them.

Roland even jumps in if I don‘t use it. After installing their free stuff I had to get rid of it fast. There is no need to check always what I am doing... Its spyware, doesn‘t belong on any system. Plus there are enough alternatives synths and protection schemes which work without punishing the paying customers.
Its absolutely essential if you are on the road, that your tools work without internet. Activation via Internet is not the problem btw...

But at the end of the day maybe then don't buy it if you're on the road?

When I first saw this thread's title, I wondered if Roland had abruptly shut down their cloud services!

If I get a message from the Roland app without even having opened my DAW, that it cannot verify my (free) license. Then I wonder why they get in contact with their servers at all. It would be naiv to assume they don‘t use such meta information...rezoneight wrote: Tue Sep 08, 2020 6:48 pm Care to share how its "spyware"?

It would be as well naiv to rely on software for any professional live work which distrust you in a way which will destroy your work... Not in my worst dreams I would buy software from such a company. Their hardware is fine though and had and still has a high historical impact on music world wide. I have no idea why in their software department they destroy their own reputation in an unprofessional way...
