Do you compose? Do you improvise? Or just practice after practice...? Playing someone else's stuff.Hermetech Mastering wrote: Mon Sep 14, 2020 2:28 pm I only started playing seriously about four years ago, but I am dedicated, 3-4 hours practise a day, five days a week, so reckon it'll be worth it!

Not new, but I've achieved new, more authentic amp like tones via DI without any mod. I just happened to use a long patch cable with a diameter of 3.60mm (measured with a Vernier caliper.) It really opened up the brightness that I thought was usually lost when using a DI input.
Would a buffer do the same?
I rolled off the volume on the guitar (it has a treble bleed on the volume pot) and used Crunk V2 and it sounded nice, no more muddiness and lack of clarity and definition
I must be using cheap shitty cables.
(I got some bursts of white noise for some reason, interface woes)

Surely most of your time is spent plugging the pedals in, then setting up the wild love wood burning machine?vurt wrote: Mon Sep 14, 2020 3:54 pm wish i could devote that kind of time
sadly, at a similar age, my physical self will not allow it. lucky if i can get a good hour in one sitting before pain takes over.
so i personally prefer to just jam and have fun now when thats possible.
not that i wont ocassionally try new tricks, just dont have a practice regime as such any more![]()

Yes, song writing and arranging, but they are part of the "free play" bit, after the regimented practise routine. I like to keep that part freer because creativity can strike at the weirdest times! I'm in a band, we do original stuff and covers (see my Bandcamp link above).
Yes, about thirty minutes a day. Right now I'm improvising all the major modes with a backing track, then all the minor modes with a backing track, and then another 15 minutes on minor pentatonic/Blues improv. And relating the scales to the chords in the key etc. This is all a part of my practise routine.
Not really sure what you mean by this. Practise is what makes me better. I enjoy my practising around 90% of the time, it's a lot of FUN (especially when you can see yourself progressing over the days, weeks, months and years). The other 10% I force myself to push on through, same as when I exercise. Are you saying I shouldn't practise, or do what brings me joy? I think it's very cool that you are able to get better without practising. I wish I could do that!
I'm not saying people should practise if they don't want to, just what I do, what works for me, what makes me happy. Someone asked about it, so I answered. It's almost like you are insinuating practise isn't fun? I'd say if your practise isn't usually fun, then you are doing it wrong.
Yes, I play loads of other people's stuff. Every Wednesday I spend my whole practise time transcribing other people's work by ear. The very best session players will tell you it's the best way to learn.

Because in your previous posts you only tell us about practicing a lot, and nothing about composing or improvising. I thought - what, is that all, just exercises and covers? Good to know you're into creating things as well.Hermetech Mastering wrote: Mon Sep 14, 2020 5:23 pmNot really sure what you mean by this. Practise is what makes me better. Do you know this guy Ishq? I like his work a lot...!

Yes, the whole reason I started playing guitar is that I wanted to play and create folk music, and I'm still doing that. I love fingerstyle the most recently, it's the main reason I want to get a Lowden, they sound gorgeous.

Same here, too much time spent playing instruments and I get back/shoulder/arm/hand/Head/whatever pains. I had to stop playing accordion because of that, I actually did practice regularly and it fired back.vurt wrote: Mon Sep 14, 2020 3:54 pm wish i could devote that kind of time

Probably right to do all the practising stuff when you're starting out - get the good habits etc while you can. The longer you play the harder it is to pick up new stuff I think, but you conversely play more in your own style. I'm a much worse guitarist now than I was 25 years ago, but (hopefully..) a much much better songwriter knowing what works for me. A good trade off I think, given that I don't do covers etc.vurt wrote: Mon Sep 14, 2020 7:29 pmfese wrote: Mon Sep 14, 2020 5:50 pmSame here, too much time spent playing instruments and I get back/shoulder/arm/hand/Head/whatever pains. oh for sure, do the practice, its boring at first running through the same scales as slow as hell..donkey tugger wrote: Mon Sep 14, 2020 7:49 pmProbably right to do all the practising stuff when you're starting out - get the good habits etc while you can. but once you get most of that done, you start as you say, understanding what you yourself need. like hermetech said, he caters his practice schedule to his needs. and yes, we all have our own personal way of using all that.
and id say your songwriting has come on a great deal even in the past few years.
or perhaps rather the production to showcase the song (words).
theres a lot more going on now, used to be, rhythm guitar, maybe a few lead riffs, crooning, drums and bass.
good stuff but basic pub rock.
now theres more "epic" in stuff, so more verve than oasis. which is good. obviously.
