I think it is pretty egotistical that you think you can just pick up any genre you fancy. It takes time to get good at a certain genre or style of music. So you should pick one you enjoy because if it is a new genre to you, you will be working at it for a long time to get good at it. And no one will listen to your music if it is uninspired and average. Since you are worried about people listening to your music you got to be good at whatever genre you choose.

That's really a personal choice and what you connect with, your expression and what you feel. I think pop, hip-hop, progressive and dance with a commercial influence and a catchy hook can have wide appeal and attract a wide audience but you will always be best if you connect with the genre, music and produce something unique to you that stands out, with your own sound/influence stamped on it. A challenge today is many tracks, artists sound the same and really, there are so many songs being produced daily its about what makes you and your music stand out from the crowd. Music production really is a labour of love and rooted in passion that stems from the heart. Also, you've likely been heavily influenced by some genre of music in your life so what do you connect with the most? Draw from that. I think in any genre there is a solid audience looking for good tunes. Cheers!

Essentially what I was going to say. When you produce a genre you love, you can very often hear that love in the end result. That said, I do think it's also a good idea to familiarize yourself with several different genres and produce some music outside your "comfort zone" on occasion. Because if there's one thing I truly appreciate, if only because I also strive for it myself, it's versatility.
My solo projects:

Does not matter what you produce as long as you are dedicated to it.
