just some farting around with the most basic settings on the juno. To get that kind of subtlety on a softsynth i'd be spending 30 minutes programming microscopic modulations to make it sound more lively.

And then you'd put it in a mix and none of that subtlety would come through and you'd have wasted your time anyway. The easy way, though, is to use velocity to add those little subtleties so that, unless you are a robot, every time you hit a note it won't be quite the same as the previous one.

Wow, that clip is not what I was expecting. There is no subtle anything in it. It's just a boring, generic, dime-a-dozen EP sound. I thought it might be some kind of subtle, evolving pad or a characterful lead but that is totally "meh".

You miss my point. As I said, I used "the simplest settings" .. The subtlety comes from the synth it's self. The organic quality is baked into the synth and it's always there. I've spent tons of time programming soft synths, and got some sounds that I really love. But as I said, when it comes to simple analog sounds, nothing beats the real thing for me.

I also disagree with what you said about it sitting in a mix. In some situations, for sure, it doesn't matter. But if it's a prominently featured part, that extra warmth and character can go a long way for my tastes.

It's about all the little fractally hairs coming off the sound that I'm after. All the odd little ways it saturates and beats against it self. Yes you absolutely can do something similar with softsynths, and yes I always route velocity to like 10 things, and I also prefer a synth with a random mod source that can be routed to several destinations.

I was being cheeky when I said hardware is "better". It's obviously all subjective. I still probably use mostly softsynths. But for instance, I tried several different softies for the main riff in this new track I'm making, couldn't get it working.. Popped in the prophet REV2 and it did just what I wanted very quickly.
