Hey all!

I'm looking for a reliable DAW to host VSTi plugins in that will slave to Ableton.

I was hoping that Reaper would. I read that FL Studio will.

Any suggestions?

Thanks!

What's the use case you're going for? Ableton can obviously run VSTs, except for 32-bit. Perhaps you're looking for bridging software, like jBridge, DDMF Metaplugin, Blue Cat Audio Patchwork, etc?

I guess Rewire client is the preferred nomenclature.

The use case would be because Ableton is not a very good VST host and unreliably crashes.

From what I gathered the only DAWs that can serve the purpose of client and not host are: Reason, Ableton, and FL Studio.

Then try using one of the solutions I mentioned. ReWire is a dead protocol, it's a headache to maintain 2+ projects simultanously not to mention there's CPU & RAM hit.

I've never had issues with Rewire. I've used Reason to Rewire in Ableton and never had crashes, but if I use something like VIP to load VST's it's even worse.

I'm wondering if the new edition of Reason that can host VST plugins is more stable than FL Studio?

FTR: I have zero problem with the way you named it. It's a common term in computing, and I absolutely detest getting rid of such common terms just because someone thinks he senses something (or wants to show he senses something, or wants to make others to sense something).

BTT.

If by "new" you mean 11, it doesn't even support ReWire. As I said, the protocol is dead, as evidenced by dropping it by its creators.

I would not depend on ReWire right now. As it is already removed from Reason, and Bitwig refused to support it from the beginning. I think i will eventually be dropped by most vendors.

Note that Reason 11 does not support ReWire and does not support VST3 yet, it hosts VST2.

Sidenote, i also own and time-to-time use Ableton and it does not crash for me. I would note which plugin causes crashes and try to troubleshoot the plugin: install newer version, install VST3 if VST2 crashed, send question to plugin's support.

I wouldn't go so far as to say rewire is dead.

Propellerhead caved IMHO on this new version when Ernst Nathorst-Böös stepped down from CEO position.

Which means what? It's going to come back in v12? :scared:

No. It doesn't mean that at all. Just because Propellerhead caved and offered Reason as a VST and abandoned Rewire doesn't mean that.

There's still a lot of people that use Rewire to sync up other DAWs.

I'm doubtful that you could run a DAW as a VST without having major stability issues.

Maybe VST3 is capable but I use VST2 and if I try loading up instruments in VIP, for example, I always has issues.
