I'm working on some Italo style music, and wishing I kept my UAD because it seems like the AMS reverb is the only really nice sounded gated/non-lin style reverb plugin...are there some native alternatives?

This one is nice https://goodhertz.co/megaverb/
But tbh. you could just use a nice reverb like valhalla vintage verb or others and throw a noisegate on the output.

Try Tal Reverb 2 on drums. Also Ambience free but only 32bit, it is similar to the TAL 2.
VVV in non-lin mod is good but a bit more difficult to adjust.

A collaboration between Nomad Factory and MoReVoX "80's Spaces". Quite pricey but does have "80's" in the name:

I imagine it might be found on sale somewhere.

Why the gate? Vintage Verb has a dedicated nonlinear algorithm for exactly this - it's even based on a RMX 16, if I am not mistaken.

Someone on gearslutz commented that AirWindow's recent reverb BrightAmbience has the vibe of that device.

Also worth mentioning:
https://www.airwindows.com/mv/
TL;DW: MV is a dual-mono reverb based on BitShiftGain and the old Midiverbs.
& Maybe even
https://www.airwindows.com/nonlinearspace-vst/
TL;DW: Airwindows flexible reverb plugin.

...but you can get that ‘sort of 80s gated’ sound if you set it just right...

Sure you have a convolution reverb in your toolbox. All you need is a comprehensive AMS RMX 16 impulse response collection: Townhouse RMX - $34.99

Not sure what that price is about, but I got it for $29, so definitely hang out for Black Friday et al.Teksonik wrote: ↑Thu Oct 01, 2020 5:48 pm A collaboration between Nomad Factory and MoReVoX "80's Spaces". Quite pricey but does have "80's" in the name:

Sonsig for short 80s verbs.
Lunar Lander for long 80s verbs.
No contest.

If you want the AMS non-line style verb, try the Non-Lin mode in ValhallaVintageVerb. Love it! Use it all the time. IK's CSR has an Inverse plugin that does that. I'm sure there are some others.

I've found the Impulse Responses of the Non-Linear presets in the original RMX16 can get you pretty much all the way there for 'that' sound. I use the ones from 'past to the future' IRs (do a google search on that name, it's a gumroad site) in Ableton's convolution reverb. I drop in the 'non linear 1' preset, tweak the EQ slightly, done.

Overloud Breverb2 has a very versatile non-linear mode plus a gate; between that, VVV and Goodhertz MegaVerb (which has a remarkable gate section), I feel like I'm covered for '80s sounds.Funkybot's Evil Twin wrote: ↑Fri Oct 02, 2020 2:37 pmIf you want the AMS non-line style verb, try the Non-Lin mode in ValhallaVintageVerb.
