Well, if you insist you could put several instances of the same instrument but with different settings as a Multi-Instrument and just enable the one instance you want?

How is this not the perfect alternative? The "Scene" you save is just a patch for your mixer. They are the exact same thing.

Yeap, this is what I'm currently doing.

I create templates that I pass around. I was hoping there was an alternative so when I pass someone the template, I wouldn't have to also pass around a bunch of presets files.

Well, if the instruments are in those templates, their settings will be saved, won't they?

I don't think there are. I have to agree with BONES - patches (presets) for instruments are what scenes are for the console :)

You could use Import Song Data to take instruments out of your templates I guess. As a user I prefer preset files but if it’s impossible to distribute a couple presets then I guess that’s a workaround.

New review in Macworld. Not a deep dive.

Interesting review. I don't agree at all with his complaints about the interface. One of the things I like is that it is so easy to de-clutter by closing things left, right and centre. I also think the included instruments are pretty good. I've started using ImpactXT in preference to Battery or even my Ujam drum VSTis. It strikes a great balance between those two extremes and also supports loops better than any of them. Presence seems to be an excellent ROMpler with plenty of very usable sounds and SampleXT is very handy, like Orion's terrific sampler on steroids. If anything lets it down it's the V/A synth, Mai Tai, but it's not actually terrible, just a bit ordinary.

The more I use Studio One, the more I love it. It is so quick and easy to do pretty much anything and, coming from Cubase, the learning curve is almost non-existent. It's also really fast - fast to load a new songs and lightning fast when it comes to switching between open songs. When I bought it, it was to replace Orion for our live shows but I've since decided that it's going to be my one and only host from now on. Screw Cubase, life's too short.

I tend to float between S1 and Ableton. I find S1 very easy to work with.

Not to beat a dead horse, but I really wish you gave Bitwig a fair, 2nd chance, ideally with aid of someone experienced who can explain how & why it's different from Cubases, Logics and Studio Ones of this world. It's easy to be discouraged, because some concepts are alien and weird, but once they click - and fit or even enhance your workflow - there's no comming back :)

Yep. S1 + Ableton or Bitwig seems to be a pretty popular setup these days :)
