Hey guys,
I need your help choosing a new, simpler audio interface and on Google the articles about this are pretty outdated.
I‘m thinking moving away from my Apollo Twin Mk2 because I consider the UAD ecosystem too expensive and not worth it for just plugin use. I bought the UAD bc I planned to get more hardware but I found out Im a ‚in the box only’ guy so no need for the AD conversation and preamps anymore which was why I bought it but I sold my hardware/outboard gear.

Since I produce Techno I dont record much vocals myself, maybe some snippets and I might get more into recording vocals later down the road or maybe Ill try someday hardware again so the preamps and converters should at least be somehow decent or lets say - somehow future proof.

Only wish I have is that the new interface wont run as hot like the UAD does (its normal according to the support).

Im on a windows computer with thunderbolt expansion card. Any recommendations?

I'm a happy user of SPL Crimson:

also worth checking out the Audient (for example their id22):

The ultimate destination without spending stupid money is RME. Best drivers, best support, best software, about the best build quality etc.

Babyface would suit your needs. It doesn't have a ton of extra connectivity, but has the option to have it if you decide you do want some further down the line.

TB isn't necessary. Latency is incredibly low over USB.

My RME also gets hot, my Steinberg stays cool. Both USB.

RME babyface (either used old one or the new Pro FS).
I second what tehlord states.

You've written 'future proof'...
-> rme

Maybe check out the focusrite clarett line? They’ve moved most of the clarett stuff to USB, but you can grab the 2pre or 4pre TB versions used for fairly decent prices.

I use 8 pre x - latency is super low and the inputs can be neutral, or colored with their air preamp switches.

thx for the advice. I think I dont need that many inputs. I dont record many vocals and maybe ill buy one synth again so two inputs are plenty enough bc I actually do everything in the box. but I will look into the clarett line

I moved from UAD to RME and couldn't be happier. Imho I don't get the fuss about UAD and it was kind of terrible (even preferred some budget interfaces like ones from echo audio and MOTU), though to be fair mine was the Apollo firewire and apparently it works better with thunderbolt.

I would stay away from RME stuff.... I have the BFP FS and the AKM chip sounds harsh... I would take another route... Audient id44 sounds better...

Steinberg/Yamaha.
For lowest latency (if this is really needed) RME.

Well... it's a babyface. :)

I've been using an NI Audio Kontrol 1 for more than 10 years. 2 audio in, 4 outs with Midi In/out. Its been great and still works fine. I'll probably update to one of their USB3 interfaces at some point.
