Softube Modular - is it OK?

Sound quality tops everything out there, but the usability leaves a lot to be desired. Drag and drop functionality is just not intuitive. They should just take a note from VCV Rack on this. Also being able to scale the actual rack to form fit it to the modules is much needed. There also isnt enough development with modular. Its just not getting love, and that sucks

^ yeah I thought there would be twice the amount of modules there is, at this point in time.
could be just me but I think it could really use a nice mixer like the one in VCV also

They should overhaul the UI, try and make more deals with eurorack companies, and try to put more work in. Voltage Modular and VCV is just eating their lunch right now. Not to mention, VCV isnt even in a DAW yet

A Twitter Softube reply this past week claimed more Modular stuff coming soon. A few weeks back they also tweeted this at someone, and I thought Model 72 was what they were referring to but apparently not.
It's good to know it's not abandoned after 4 years. But when they charge as much as they do for those 3rd party modules, they really need to keep the flow going before people start regretting their purchases as VCV Rack floods the world with endless free modules.
But damn Softube does have the best modules and the best sound. Just need far more of it.
I just wish some of these companies were more forthcoming about what's ahead. Many prefer the surprise product drop to get people instant hyped and spending.

Is the interface still lo-res?

When you say "need" do you mean that there are basic things that cannot be done with the existing modules or that you have a psychological hunger for more and more?m43lstr0m wrote: Mon Oct 12, 2020 5:27 am But damn Softube does have the best modules and the best sound. Just need far more of it.

didn't read the whole thread, yet.
softube modular is unrevilaed in sound quality. reaktor can sound as similar, by the way.
i own Voltage Modular, with a lot of modules, more than 400, i have reaktor, with euroreakt blocks/pack, and 4 toybox pakcs.
and the everything turns pack. not to mention, the buchla rack version, etc.
voltage modular is a different character qua sound. it is pretty good.
still, yes softube modular hasn't that much modules, the workflow could be a lot better, but i can make the most strange, great sounding patches with the limited amount of modules, i have them all, except spring reverb.. (so also heartbeat, tsar-1 bundle, model 72, etc.)
i have a quite different approach in softube modular, i don't use sequencers, not true, the vermona i use, but, still, i make mostly patches in which the modules avaiable modalte eachother, "feedback loops", not the right term.
of course LFO's, some times a logic utility. but with the modules available, there are so many possibilities, i don't feel limited, yes a scope would be great.
and hanging cables, because after a while, the overview.
the interface lo-res? yes me thinks, but i am still on a 1920x1080 (or one of the 3 has it), so no prob, for me.
the modules that softube has, sound great, no, they sound absolute great... in my opinion... and you have enough modules to do a lot of things.
perhaps i don't feel the limitation, i expect i wouldn't, even if i don't own reaktor or voltage modular.
yes, of course i have also VCV rack, bought some stuff. but VCV rack i use not that much, only a few times, i really worked on something.
it is of course always personal, softube modular isn't cheap, but it is worth it, for me, because, yes the sound, they could make modular better, i am critical, i mentioned also to softube.
o well it was also my first soft modular... reaktor is used in another way, back then...
this will always the discussion with soft modulars, and there are more around, that are great, even a free one, 2 even (or more).
and my CPU can handle softube modular, quite well, for an oldie (3 years, but then came AMD, and the cores...), it is not only the CPU, also the built (by myself).
working with softube modular, besides the strange workflow, is still a pleasure, because of what i can achieve...

More like I am aware of some more fantastic modules from Mutable Instruments, Intelligel, and Erica Synths that are emulated on VCV Rack and it would be great to have the real things on Modular. And I would love some Make Noise modules like Maths, as the hardware versions of most of those are over $500.filulilu wrote: Mon Oct 12, 2020 7:22 amWhen you say "need" do you mean that there are basic things that cannot be done with the existing modules or that you have a psychological hunger for more and more?m43lstr0m wrote: Mon Oct 12, 2020 5:27 am But damn Softube does have the best modules and the best sound. So while I don't care for an avalanche of modules (VCV Rack has far too many, it's daunting and it scares me away), there are some categories of modules that Softube doesn't even have yet that would be nice to see show up soon.

Make Noise will never, ever, ever, ever, ever make software of their modules. Tony Rolando is extremely against this

VCV Rack has a module called Floats which emulates Maths, but the dev who made it caught a lot of heat, and had to change the layout of the module. Befaco has a VCV module similar to maths. The 4ms module for softube modular is sort of similar.

They created a great concept that everyone (other modular/ Eurorack style emulation plugins devs) except them has grabbed, done better and ran with.
Voltage Modular demonstrates how it should be done.
Functional, ergonomic and a shed load of affordable modules with development guided by users.
Softube just don't listen, the preset management system even though added years later is a case in point, its barely functional by today's standards.

VCV is equal in sound quality to softube modular, but that is subjective because most would agree it blows it away because of all of the available modules for free like almost the entire line of mutable instruments modules. So I think most users prefer to use VCV Bridge plugin in their DAW, and VCV Rack alongside their DAW. Reaper lets you use VCV Rack without bridge, so that is a plus as well.
If you have two monitors, VCV rack is a joy to use alongside your DAW of choice
