From one extreme to the other, UJAM's VG-Carbon virtual guitar plugin Oh no, it's got 'latch mode', and I need sleep

Well, it's gonna be a ton of fun in the afternoon tomorrow. I got this as a free bonus with any purchase from
Plugin Boutique, (offer good for awhile longer) and there are a couple dance steps to get registered, simply make or use your UJAM account, and paste your email and password on the reg page that opens when the plugin is launched. (are you listening Korg, Propellorheads, and Izotope??? It works in linux, so your software's inability to discover 'the internet connection' is proven to be dud faulty by the good coders at UJAM )

So in quick use-test, it works, choose a mental state from the sanity dial, play live, or choose various phrasiologies, while putting the latch to good use.
And the modwheel has not been forgotten

I added NI's Replika for some salt and pepper. As with Grind Machine II test above, used in Ubuntu Studio 19.10. , wine-staging 5.10, and Reaper 5.99

I have a small SSD, now in external case, while internal, it somehow became an LVM2 device, and refused some rescues, and since wine team just released a new V 5.17, I chucked Ubuntu Studio 20.04 on it, installed wine, and copied over some choice bits from a wine 5.16 folder, some IK, NI, and cakewalk, and the registry files, and everything seems in working order, with no installers or authorizations needed.

I suspect that some cloning utility would have been an all-or-nothing venture, prohibiting the recycling to a small SSD. I think cloning apps like an identical brand/model drive, or a larger drive if the model/brand is different. But I'm no system cloning expert, Or even novice. Just enjoying what wine make possible.

In the mood for some jingle-jangle, I started IK's standalone SampleTank 3, and loaded a bouzuki, and a gu zheng (after a google or two )

I then loaded the standalone Amplitube 4, and connected the two with qjackctl.
I loaded A4's 65 Twin Reverb amp, and the Tercs Fulltone chorus as a rack,
which pairing provides a lot of control, beyond the lot of control already possible using SampleTanks own multi-effects.

This was also done as a proof of concept setup, for times when a dedicated daw software, is not my first choice. (Some IK standalones offer features not found in their plugin cousins) Good times

While trying to get a new plugin working, when I opened Reaper's 'New' category, I found Proteus VX listed instead
Maybe some mystery update set it's hair on fire, but, hey, it's working, and has a gazillion sounds in it's Composer exb soundbank, lots of very nice bread and butter Pianos, EP's, organs, basses and sundries. Looks like the soundbank needs to be loaded from the file menu each startup, short of digging in to the configs. Found a nice Nylon Guitar sound, and harmonics etc, so loaded the native U-he ColourCopy delay, and made a quick preset. I have some 0404 install cd's lurking nearby, hopefully their exb banks will also work.

The Guitar Rig 6 demo in wine/reaper For whatever reasons, GR5 failed to scan in wine/reaper for the last few months, so I'm glad the new version does.
The addition of more NI plugins to the selection includes Raum. The first impression I got was loudness.
Seems to be a ton more gain than the previous version 5, which I never considered as being too quiet...
Preset handling is nice, lots of tall racks to let you get a feel for the possibilities. Drag&drop to reorder plugins is still working. I'll install the full GR6 version on a testing-linux setup once I sort the upgrade options.

If a linux user get's stumped by Bitwig's midi setup, it might just need virtual midi ports, which can be obtained by a command:

sudo modprobe snd_virmidi

In the screenshot, you'll see in the qjackctl connections panel, that the command brought out four virtual midi ports, and I have one of them connected to an existing midi-through port on my maudio soundcard.

Another midi concern is selecting a generic or branded controller. Bitwig settings has a list of name-brands,
but the generic option works well, and can be edited.
It's javasscript, but by using a pair of text editors, and opening an existing script, you can compare the crucial branded enties to the generic in the second editor, and insert your keyboard specs and title as needed.

Bitwig presents several projects for new users to open, and the demo is the whole enchilada, with saving disabled, so it's easy to see if 'love is in the air'

Just a reminder that Tone2 Nanohost makes it easy to have your favorite plugin wrapped and displayed as a standalone software, without the daw overheads. It displays cpu and db as you play, which is nice to be aware of. You can choose wineasio from it's preferences, and start it with the wine command, followed by the path to the executable. To create the wrapped version, just copy NanoHost64bit.exe to a folder
with your desired plugin, and rename it with the plugin's title,
in my case, FathomProAVX1.exe

A 32bit version is part of the archive, very handy when polishing the silver, and dusting off the antiques

Also, have a gander at all those Fathom reverb controls, clicking on each module opens up the related parameter page, so it's easy to fine tune each aspect of the sound

For an experiment, I wanted a windows plugin sequencer made into a tone2 standalone, so it could hopefully play the linux Yoshimi synth, connected using qjackctl patchbay. I made the now free Dualism (two separate sequencers in one plugin) into a tone2 nanohost standalone, launched the a2jmidid alsa midi bridge, followed by the standalone Yoshimi Synth. I started futzing with the connections, and got them way more complicated than needed But success arrived on the midnight brain from Georgia I have three screenshots, first the qjackctl audio connections with Yoshimi played by Dualism, the second is the qjackctl jackd-midi panel, and the third is the alsa midi panel.

Dualism was created by the great and cheerful Chris Sciurba, aka UGO, a prolific synth-edit dev and sound designer, who Apple wisely snatched up in the Camel-Audio-Alchemy buyout.

Dualism gui has two rows of 16 steps, the many presets pepper them with activated steps (active step color is yellow), with various directions of play, number of octaves, midi channels, speed/timing options, and a latch mode. One seq can play a one-octave baseline, while the second one plays a glissand up and down over three or four octaves...you can really mix-n-match. I made an fxp preset where all 32 steps are active, and latch-mode is enabled, so anything and everything I play, is played back until I play something more. And with Yoshimi being a 16 part multitimbral beast, with wide range of presets, you can tailor the sequence to the type of sounds you layer, and tailor the sounds you choose, to the type of sequences you create.

Dualism can also run in a wine supporting linux daw, and when all the plugins used are wrapped by LinVst can be used in native-linux daws, so there's no lid on the stew pot

Being mainly a linux user, I don't have that much of a grip on the complete
windows software library, and when Paree mentioned in the linux DAW topic that Akai MPC Beats was working perfectly with wine in his linux setup, I'd never heard of the beast from Akai, so went out on safari, to hunt it down.

And there it was, just a short hike out from base camp, and with a sizeable collection of gigabytes to chew on. Thanks, Paree, for the heads-up!

My first impression is Akai have done a great job. You can drag-select vertically and horizontally to move or delete multiple sequencer entries, and the help sytem is handy for people like me.

The installation is 5 or 6 gig, but I had to disable my wine d2d1 override in
wine-staging 5.19 eggshell release. Walking softly, I was able to jot down a litlle seq without digging too deep in the manual. This could be a healthy addition to many linux musicians. It's free, and a deluxe version is available for a $60 upgrade, which I suspect would be money well spent, especially if you have one of the supported midi/pad controllers. Thanks Akai, for a well-programmed tool that doesn't freak out when windows isn't in da haus
