No, it just sounds dead.

I loaded up a demo of 6, excited to hear the new emulations... terrible. OK for clean stuff, but the high-gain stuff sounds especially bad. They should really license their guitar amp emulations from someone else, like they do their compressors. bx or Softube would be great. The effects still sound pretty, including the new stuff, but I was thinking about upgrading to the new Komplete to mostly get Guitar Rig 6, and after a half hour I thought, “nope.”

Fire Breather sounds great to me. It nails that modern British-inspired sound (i.e. Friedman). It's not for ultra-high gain, but when pushed with a Tube Screamer it is really really nice. Chicago wasn't even intended to do high gain, so that's a bit of an apples/oranges there. Just wait for the following updates, new amps will be coming.

(Also NI doesn't really wanna license DSP from others now that they have a dedicated FX team.)

I meant those amps when they're at their higher gain settings, not like a Engel Herbert or something, and I'll totally disagree with you on this one. They sound really bad to me. They seem to be licencing a lot of tech from Softube already, why not guitar amp emulations?

I quite like (some of) them actually, BUT find that they don't really do clean as well as I like my Clean ones to be...I too (like ED, maybe he has heard them, I haven't) am waiting to hear more stuff, but unlike you, quite like the first three attempts.
Now it is released I can speak a bit more about them.
First the Bass. My Favourite Bass Software is Eden WT800 followed by Overloud's Markwhateveritis called.
As a bassist I never quite liked GK amps in my live rigs at all, and I have read on forums (NI never told us) that it is suppose to be a GK amp. I was surprised, cause I actually liked it more than the Overloud's one (at least on the types of stuff I tried it on) and though I still prefer Softube's Eden, if I had to use Bass Invader I would survive.

For the cleaner stuff, I tried Chicago, but for me it wasn't clean enough (worse I had just gotten Neural's Plini which I prefer by miles), I also prefer Fuse Audio's F59, more my style, but if I wanted something not as clean as I normally do, but not really fully dirty, The Chicago could work for me easily, and easily liked it as many of the S-Gear stuff.

I didn't quite gel with the Fire Breather as much though.

Tastes are so all over the place.

The deal with Softube is from years and years ago, it's valid only for those products but not any new ones (again, NI didn't quite have a proper FX team back then, they do now, so...)

I guess you don't like the Friedman-like tones then. I love it.

Well.....Even though I find other offerings a bit more realistic and detailed, lately I have been doing a lot of audio for video with a cover band and Guitar Rig provides quick and usable sounds that sit in the mix just fine. So for me it is not dead.

I use:IKM for Fender 2 and Brit series, use SGear a lot w Duke, use Swanky Amp for cleans as well, use Poulin Brit sometimes, I also use hardware Simplifier w Revv G2 and Fuzzeletta and use my Pod Go. I had sold GR5 and still want 6. Its a sickness. I don't use my Kazrog much but like the Nightmare and all these things mix w crapton of fx on PC

So... Is Guitar Rig dead?
