Aurora is like a fresh breath of air. Super playable and freaking awesome FM synth. Really invites you to explore

Judicious expansion of the content of Aurora could all but preclude any true need for sample import (which would be awesome, but a costly add on feature from a dev’s perspective) - that’s because of the way FM through the DX algorithm paradigm works.
Simply adding different “distorted” or misshapen sine waves to Aurora’s DNA could add new sound possibilities to what Aurora could do.

Calm down, guys, let's keep it reasonable and down-to-earth. The reason why Aurora is so appealing is because it's so simple. Not only is sample import a massive amount of work I imagine, but also it kind of flies in the face of the whole concept, which is pure, unadulterated FM synthesis. Also, even if Ryan were to introduce sample import, I bet people would then start whining about the inability to modify their own samples because of the one-page nature of the synth, like... c'mon. Inclusion of some more waveforms would be most welcome, but asking for sample import is a bit much, don't you think. If you really want the hybrid combination of FM and sample-based synthesis with sample import, then just get Big Tick Rhino.

It's funny, there's a Thread over at Gearslutz where someone is whining that Roland's Zenology Pro doesn't import user samples.
For example:
For example:
Trying out Zenology Pro now. Will probably buy it but sample import would make it an instant purchase.

To be abundantly clear: my request is not for adding samples and/or sample import, just (hard-coded) expansion of available carrier/modulator choices - im not asking for any changes whatsoever in how RyFi has built his synth; quite the contrary: I respect who he is, and what he's done with and in Aurora.
Please reread what I wrote to clarify.
The request is an ancient one: it's exactly the same one that I've had for about three and a half decades - since the DX/TX dinosaurs roamed the Earth and all of it's studios. There's no question that many sounds can be made with just modulating sines; but even just by adding a series of misshapen sines to Aurora's DNA as content can expand the palate of tones that a DX-modelled algorithmic FM synth can produce - it's the nature of the beast.

Again: I've read through this thread - since RyFi has already expanded Aurora's available waveforms (not to be confused with samples) from (1) to (8), it would make sense to continue along that pathway and even go-to-town with the number of waveforms that Aurora has embedded. Again operationally: Aurora would work precisely the same - but distinguished - possibly by miles - from other DXFM software interpretations.
I also would be extremely happy to see RyFi himself choose the waveforms to add - I deeply appreciate that Aurora is his baby; that it has cost him dearly - clearly a lot of time, love, and (unfortunately) unrecoverable $$$ went into it, although that's sometimes the only path that one can take to learn - by the doing. It would indeed be very satisfying to see Aurora well delineated from all others - Aurora and RyFi deserve it, imho.

I come from years of DX/TX ownership - that includes programming them. The DX-7 was tough: it required a lot of patience, especially with my coming from the immediate gratification world of analog synthesizers. You indeed could coax many sounds out of the DXFM platform that you wouldn't expect - filter sweeps is what i remember best - at the cost of hours and hours of work. We all have our work flows; our preferences, I respect that - but working with Aurora is orders of magnitude faster to experiment with/program then a DX-7, as an example.

That's an interesting suggestion don, so thank you, but it's unlikely. I'm favouring a constrained set of the most essential features over the open-endedness of near-infinite choices and the ensuing option paralysis that something like sample import would provide... for the time being, at least.don_sook wrote: Fri Oct 16, 2020 8:23 pm I don't think this has been mentioned yet, but will there be any updates in the future allowing the user to import their own samples into the 6 operators?
I'm sure there are other synths that would be a better match for that.

goldenanalog, thanks for all your suggestions and support and apparent understanding of my goals for my synth. Give me some time to contemplate what you're proposing before I say anything further.
I'm adding new capabilities to Aurora FM but wasn't planning on anything in the waveform department other than the fixes for the correct Yamaha 4-op waveforms, but I'm going to re-evaluate that as I consider your suggestion.

Thank-you, sir! It's a pleasure to meet you, btw. I just bought it - no brainer, really - I believe that I've sent you the data that's requested; please let me know if I've messed anything up.

Bad news, everyone!
Actually, horrible horrible news. A reboot after a Windows update yesterday totally bricked my system. Attempts to repair failed. Attempts to reinstall the OS failed. Further attempts to reinstall the OS failed, while wiping my partitions and destroying everything I need for development. I'm without the ability to do any development or even generate licenses. I can't do anything. I need to overcome this OS problem, rebuild my development environment, and recover my source code from my private GitHub repos. If anyone attacks GitHub and my source code is lost before I'm able to recover it, it'll be bullet-to-the-head time for RyFi.
Please feel free to join me in cursing the universe for my undeserved misery. Sorry about this. I didn't ask for this.

Jesus, that's terrible. Keep us posted, hopefully you'll be able to solve this. I hope all your all recent development has been saved on your private github repository and you'll be able to continue your work.
