Studio One 5, Komplete Kontrol, and tears of agony with non-NKS instruments

Hi there,

I'm banging my head (and not in a good way) trying to get Studio One to recognize the knobs on my Komplete Kontrol keyboard with non-NKS instruments.

Specifically, I just bought the awesome "Infinite Brass" set of instruments, for which the author thoughtfully assigned MIDI CC# automations for lots of settings like flutter (CC16), growl (CC17), etc.

Turning the knobs on my keyboard DOES appropriately adjust the corresponding instrument setting slider...
- When I use Komplete Kontrol standalone
- When I use Komplete Kontrol as an instrument within Cubase

However, for the life of me (and after spending a ridiculous number of hours), I can't get this working when using Komplete Kontrol as an instrument in Studio One.

Turning the expression wheel and volume slider work. But turning any of the knobs on the keyboard do absolutely nothing in KK inside of Studio One.

Understandably, the "Infinite Brass" guy was flummoxed; he's never heard of such a crazy problem. And Presonus pointed me to this how-to blog post which directs the user to download MIDI-OX... a utility last updated in 2011 that doesn't reliably work in Windows 10.

Would really love your wisdom here, thanks in advance!

You don't have other choice! Just follow the steps and install MIDI-OX (don't worry about the update! MIDI is ancient anyway!):

That's why I sold my KK m32 and Maschine mikro! They are pain in the ass to get working outside NI environment! But, at least you have a solution, just do it ;)
Using: Cubase Pro 15, Reason 13, Tascam US-4x4HR, MODX6, DM12D, LaunchKey 49, Yamaha guitar(Pacifica 612v) and bass (BB234) and some virtual instruments and synths.

Heh, well, the other option is to just switch over to Cubase, since I've only invested a dozen or so hours + $30 into Studio One 5 (via the $15/month Presonus Sphere program)

And yeah, frankly if I had known then what I know now about the lousy handling of non-NKS instruments (and that I'd fall in love with VSTs like Infinite Brass and Bohemian Violin!)... I'd have bought a different keyboard <sigh>

But anyway, EnGee, thanks for the reality check on this!

P.S. -- Out of curiosity, what keyboard did you replace the KK one with?

Post

Before you switch back, try what this guy has done, maybe it works with you:

I already have other keyboards, but anyway, my new setup is Arturia keylab mkii, MODX 6 and ATOM (don't use nanoKontrol2 since I bought keylab mkii). I also thought to reverse back to Cubase, but the one problem I had, I solved it today morning :) It was a tricky one with S1 receiving double midi msgs from MODX 6 (Cubase, Samplitude and Live 9 didn't have this problem). Anyway, everything is working now, and that saved me quite a lot :D

Ah, hey, thanks for the pointer to the video... but alas, that was pre-S1/KK integration, and he just got the transport controls working... seemingly not the knobs. Posted a comment to see if he's figured that out, though :)

And heh, the Arturia Keylab mkii was the one I almost got, but ended up with the S88 (and kinda regret that).

Thanks again for the info! Will reluctantly try MIDI-OX (or see if I can figure out something with the S1 "Control Link") before jumping over to Cubase.

* From a comment on the blog post you referenced: "Why make it so complicated? Why not just create a template and use Control Link with the Controller in the MIDI window?" The response suggests it's possible, but just not as extensible.

It is really a big headache with DAWs! You can't find the perfect one! I mean Cubase maybe the closest, but it has its own problems (at least for me). For example, a sudden noise like a spike (not always, but it did happened to me). There is also a problem with nVidia cards. I don't know if they fix it or not. I'm on Windows, so maybe Cubase on Mac is better now than on Windows!

The S Series of NI KK keyboards are very well made (as I heard), but also Arturia Keylab MK II. I'm about one month or so with it and I really like it. The build is very good quality and the keyboard is from the best out there. I have the 49 keys and I can learn playing piano on it (somehow). It is of course much better than the Yamaha MODX 6 keys, so sometimes I find it nicer to play the sounds of the Yamaha by the keylab keys :)
