Why you left REAPER?

Reaper just didn't offer me anything new and certain things bothered me. Maybe some of those things are customizable but at the time couldn't find any answers.
1) The MIDI properties editor seems to have only 25 steps per 16th note while S1 (and I believe most DAWs) has 100. You can use shift drag for better precision but sometimes I want to enter precise numbers.
2) There seemed to be no "default velocity" option.
3) No way to have the meters reset peaks automatically after a few seconds. Can use shortcut for it but that doesn't cut it for me.
4) Sometimes when I had a project open and then opened another one from the 'recent projects', it crashed. Maybe caused by a plugin.
5) Didn't like the FX and media browser. Couldn't find an easy way to customize it.

I've actually considered recently going back to REAPER or at least give it another chance. I bought REAPER as my first DAW back in 2013, and I've now found out that I actually need to buy it again to get the newest version (I know this is mentioned as you buy it, but I forgot after 7 years).
I think that business model is fine in general, but I do not see any revolutionary stuff going on in the newest version, compared to the one I used back then.

But I had to let it go. It was constantly naked. Disgusting!

Regarding note properties, there's another significant digit but it isn't displayed. If you zoom in and add a digit in the properties and apply it, you'll see the note lengthen or shorten appropriately. It's being translated to MIDI ticks behind the scenes, like all DAWs do.lokomotiv wrote: Thu Oct 22, 2020 6:28 pm 1) The MIDI properties editor seems to have only 25 steps per 16th note while S1 (and I believe most DAWs) has 100. If you change the ruler to MIDI ticks (Options > Time format for ruler) then note properties will show maximum MIDI resolution (960 PPQN). Just be aware if you enter a length of 0.960 it'll change it to 1.000 because that's what it actually is, one quarter note. Thirty-second notes become 0.480 and so on. You can have a note as short as 1 tick.
If as you say DAWs have a resolution of 100 PPQN then they offer less than REAPER in order to make the math easier but they have to fudge numbers in order to do so. For example, 0.251 with 100 PPQN translated to 960 PPQN would be 969.6. It's being rounded up to 970 of course. That's why REAPER shows only two decimals. It doesn't divide neatly after that.
The worst case scenario is 0.5 ticks of rounding in either direction. So the question is if you want accuracy with regards to the underlying technology of MIDI or the convenience of decimal math at the cost of precision. You can dive into a wormhole when you start to consider synchronizing with hardware via MIDI clock or with other formats like video with timecode.
Regarding velocity, new plotted notes will have the velocity of where you last clicked on a piano roll key, increasing from left to right. Or when you last edited the velocity on a note by dragging the velocity handles on it. Or last edited the velocity in note properties. The value is per-MIDI editor.

By time, no. Yeah thanks, that kind of allows the behavior I'm looking for.yellowmix wrote: Tue Oct 27, 2020 2:53 pm If you change the ruler to MIDI ticks (Options > Time format for ruler) then note properties will show maximum MIDI resolution (960 PPQN).
Yeah, I have that set, but I like it to reset automatically after a few seconds when doing compression. Not a big issue but just something that forces me to work a bit differently than I'm used to.yellowmix wrote: Tue Oct 27, 2020 2:59 pm By time, no. I am not nerdy and a musician and find Reaper relatively easy to understand.dellboy wrote: Thu Oct 22, 2020 12:45 pmFor me ------ "king of performance, feature richness and flexibility" ------ are not of great interest.Trancit wrote: Thu Oct 22, 2020 12:21 pm
And where is that so much more difficult to drag and drop the "Routing" button from one track to another???
It works a bit different... yes... but for a good reason... show me in Studio One i.e. how you route the midi from one track to multiple others... and at the very end it´s similar idiot proof like any other method and it´s a matter of seconds for beginners to google this and find helpful explanations...
Not wanting to learn something new or calling something complicated are different topics...
I am with you all that many features of Reaper are a bit nerdy and that Reaper is mostly dead ugly but please stay fair... no need to drag every little aspect of Reaper in mire...
I am not a Reaper fan by any means but this prog is still undisputed king of performance, feature richness and flexibility... so something they must have done right...
Simplicity of use - intuitive without needing to google - and made for musicians and not nerds - would be my type of DAW.
I will download the Reaper demo and see if I can get "VST to audio" to work without resorting to the help or googling.
Why has something got to be easy enough to not Google to understand it anyway?

I always have Reaper installed. I use it as a reference and checking from time to time if I can make music with it easier than before!
Anyway, I need to upgrade (I have version 4 originally, so it is ended with 5.99). I don't know, but but at some point Reaper might click with me! I like the new one Version 6. It has great features and I don't think I will leave it really, as it is not my main DAW

I recently bought Reaper as my first DAW because the price seemed so good. But now I realize that some other DAWs come with really good plugins. Reaper comes with plugins but I don't hear people praise them like I hear for some other DAWs.
