1 app to rule them all: NanoStudio 2 vs. Drambo

I want to learn one iOS music app really well, maybe supplementing only with an external sequencer and/or mastering suite. For me that narrows it to Drambo and NS2, and I’m having a really hard time choosing between them. I mostly make minimal dub techno (and I make no apologies for that!) So of these 2 apps, which is likely the better learning / creation investment?

Drambo is basically a new take on a modular synth (and more). NanoStudio2 is a well-designed and implemented DAW. Both are excellent. A 3rd option would be something like Grooverider16.
Does that help?
Sidenote: the audiobus forums are vastly more helpful than here for iOS musicians.

You just sold me on Drambo. NS2’s Obsidian is pretty outstanding though. Reverb sounds reallly good, too. But Drambo’s Plocks, scene morphing, pattern sequencing, multiouts, and sound crafting flexibility in a totally integrated package make it hard to pass up!

If you go the Drambo route, I would recommend AUM and some Eventide and Fabfilter FXsaichele wrote: Thu Oct 22, 2020 12:54 amYou just sold me on Drambo. NS2’s Obsidian is pretty outstanding though. I really like the sound generation tools in Drambo... some of the FX are not my favorites
Drambo is steadily being improved too.
I love my Elektron boxes...

Drambo is a modular environment that lines in the "Its just IOS" mindset and will never compete with desktop counterparts, NS2 does everything as well as any desktop counterpart does (Not that there are any desktop DAWs with no audio tracks anymore)
NS2 takes about an hour to learn if you have ever used a DAW before, so use that and learn Drambo.

Drambo is not trying to be a desktop DAW... same like an Elektron machine is not trying to be a desktop DAW. Drambo is a modular groovebox. Like an Elektron.bungle wrote: Sat Oct 24, 2020 10:23 am Drambo is a modular environment that lines in the "Its just IOS" mindset and will never compete with desktop counterparts, NS2 does everything as well as any desktop counterpart does (Not that there are any desktop DAWs with no audio tracks anymore)

NanoStudio is a good midi environment, but that lack of audio tracks makes it crippled as DAW compared to the desktop. I also don't love it's included instruments.
If I could only use a single App, of the two I would pick Drambo. The synthesis is excellent. Right there with today's VST's. Nanostudio is more like a desktop DAW, but not nearly as good (no audio, no freeze, no MPE, etc. etc.) I may as well use my laptop. Drambo is more fun and unique... something quite different.

Both are good but Drambo (but it is not a DAW but can be a self contained workstation if you want)is a beast. If i could have just one iOS app on my mac it would be Drambo. Maybe soon with an ARM macbook.
NanoStudio 2 is my favorite DAW on iOS but it is missing important things (like audio tracks). Well all DAWs on iOS are not my thing these days and so i would take Drambo here again to produce within it or just record it all in my desktop DAW from my iOS device.
Next update is coming as well....
