One is only as great as his gear.

I‘m sure there is a market for low fidelity triangle ambient. Not so dependent on gear. Just grab the free valhalladsp stuff, that may be all you need.

Joke aside. Is there a question?

My songs improved greatly after introducing neutron 3 advanced and Ozone 9 Advanced. It seems they also improve a bit by using the sonarworks plugin for my headphones. So yes. You can be the best craftman there is, but if you have shitty tools you can only go so far. You can make great things with what you have, but the results would be even far better with better tools. If you do not see the logic in that, then that is not really my problem.

1) It is entirely possible for many talented musicians to make great music out of basic gear / equipment.

2) However, the use of better gear (eg, more advanced synthesizers or better monitors and acoustic treatment) can often make it a lot easier or faster to get better results (eg creating an unusual sound or translating one's mixes to other listening environments) for one's music.

3) 'Greatness' is a subjective term and perhaps an unhelpful one in the context of this topic:
It seems depressing and also rather indicative of a person lacking in self-confidence if they truly believe the (false) statement that 'one is only as great as his gear'.

I always thought my biggest limitations were time, inspiration, arthritis, and tendinitis, but it turns out it was my gear all along. Who knew?

Meh, how great would the fookin' Beatles have been, if they'd only had Ozone and Neutron.

They did. It was called George and Martin back then.

Obvious correlary: One could be the shittiest craftsman ever and have the 'best' gear money can buy and be maybe able to polish the turd better (and these are turds because of a lack of talent or chops at songwriting, among other problems).
The song's quality as a necessary function or product of gear quality is a bad premise, only bad logic comes from that.
You're talking about production, and not songwriting or composition at all. The best song in the world could be written by someone with not much of a voice accompanying herself on a cigar box with two strings, for that matter.

The whole argument stems from fallacy and fundamental misconstructions.

That a production might be improved by better-sounding FX or instruments to begin with is another matter. That a person's craft may improve having tools they get on with better hence improved results is a reasonable assumption; & one is not going to become the best musician they can be never obtaining a *good* instrument; but songs have intrinsic qualities, performed splendidly or poorly, on the best equipment in the best acoustics and transduction or not. The logic of that seems plain enough.

Blast from the past!
I liked Adam F's "Circles" very much in late 90s (great dnb choons and I got the CD for free somehow).

Still, if you like your Welsh dance boyos from that time, none better than Jon the Dentist.
(Well maybe Sasha...).

This was played at many a Cardiff house party backintheday:

Yep, I know who James Todd Smith is (and have two of his albums).

I read your post and got confused, thinking you'd meant Adam F is Welsh.
Which is why, after I talked about him and 'Circles' that I went on to talk about (incorrectly other) Welsh dance boyos.

I blame the mitzis we all had dancing our tits off to Imagination
