Is it possible to load plug-ins onto any kind of keyboard? I don't have any experience with synth keyboards of any kind but I do know how to use soft synths. I want to use my plug-ins in live acts but I don't have any clue about how to go about it.

i would recommend using Logic Audio (even and old logic audio 5 if you are on Pc) because it allows to bypass plugins with midi controllers or midi notes, anything you want.

You can, for example, playing one note on your keyboard, tune a send to a bus, put on a plugin, and with another note, tune the send off, and bypass the plugin.

Ex: C3 will send you audio into a bus and put on the plugin you want
D3 will turn of the send, and bypass the plugin

or mute the track, or lower the volume, or boost an eq, or anything you want...

you can do whatever you want with Environments in Logic audio.

Unless you get something like one of the OpenLabs creations or Muse'sReceptor,you'll still have to bring a PC or a Mac with you,and you'll still need some form of minihost at least.I'd recommend either Chainer or Energy XT-both are lightweight and provide tons of routing options.
Hook up your keybord to what you're using for a MIDI interface and hook up your soundcard's outputs to either the house mixer or your own mixer and you're set to go.

What are some good hosts for macs? I'm going to be using a g4 laptop but I haven't ever used it for composing (I recently converted). Are there any free ones? What features make a host better for playing on the spot? Thanks for the help.

there are two hosts that aren't avaible on Pc : digital Performer, and logic audio

there might be some free sequencers, but certainly not very suitable for the live.

You could try Live too, might be what you're looking for...
