Yes original poster, I would prefer to hear great musicians using great gear than great musicians using shit gear.

There are lots of ingredients in great music. And everything matters! But some things matter more than other things, perfection is not required, often even gets in the way of getting the desired emotional reaction.

But for making a hit that is a very different game with different rules. Evidence abundant: Gangnam Style, Vogeltjesdans, I'm Blue dadadee dadida. Big hits with zero substance that could have been made on a cheap synth workstation in an hour.

That is the difference between music business and the art of music.
