Yes original poster, I would prefer to hear great musicians using great gear than great musicians using shit gear.

There are lots of ingredients in great music. And everything matters! But for making a hit that is a very different game with different rules. Evidence abundant: Gangnam Style, Vogeltjesdans, I'm Blue dadadee dadida. Big hits with zero substance that could have been made on a cheap synth workstation in an hour.
That is the difference between music business and the art of music.
