Dont buy things you dont need is the point being made. As far as wanna be producers go, music is their thing, for anyone doing it for fun, it isn't. Those people dont need to keep spending and spending on the latest updates and plugins, no more than an amateur photographer needs to buy a 4k monitor.antic604 wrote: Sun Nov 01, 2020 9:08 amThat does not compute. If music is your hobby, this implies you make the money elsewhere, which then means you usually want to be on the "bleeding edge" and also can afford - pun intended - few days of getting new stuff working in your setup, if there happen to be any bugs or incompatibility.Kinh wrote: Sun Nov 01, 2020 8:40 amIf music production is your thing, rather than just a hobby then by all means.
We've discussed this several times already, but it's the hobbyist & wanna-be-producer crowds that drive DAW, plugin & preset-pack markets.
Is Ableton live 10 suite worth it?

I have to admit that you did display tremendous discipline in this thread
To the OP: just the solid stability in the M4L area widely reported and the amazing tools available by Max it’s really worth the jump.

The definition of a hobby is buying (& spending time on) things that one doesn't need, because they make them happy and are often the thing one works for.

I read KVR a lot more than i post, and, man, you've been dumped on pretty hard the last couple months, whether it's PC police or DAW evangelists...and i remember disagreeing with you about Bitwig and had the most civil, respectful and logical exchanges i've ever had on here. You're also super helpful to Live and Bitwig users when there's some sort of tech problem. Not sure what people's problems are...antic604 wrote: Sun Nov 01, 2020 4:39 pm So no matter whether I mention Bitwig or not I'm gonna get shit on? Nice.
Anyway, i've certainly been re-examining Live the last couple months as i've been finishing some music. I think Live both suffers and also excels because of its fundamental existential quandary, which is that it doesn't know whether it wants to be a recording/production suite, a live performance tool/creative extension to your main DAW (which is how it started its life), or a sound design playground. Every other DAW does one of these things (maybe even two) better than Live ever will, and with the added bonus (or curse) of heaving much deeper functionality in this one area than Live ever will also, which has traditionally frustrated Live users (myself included). However, i haven't found any other program that taps into every area like this, which is what makes Live worth it to me.
I think with version 10 they solidified their commitment to two of these approaches by adding more workflow improvements (hell, that new Channel EQ everybody hates has been a huge timesaver lately) and tighter M4L integration. As these are the areas i'm in normally, i consider the upgrade fee worth it. Maybe try the demo and see if it offers something you're missing? My guess would be that the next update will be something to do with Push or some sort of performance improvement (stage, not CPU).

Can sry quick question regarding Ableton:
1 - when I browse my samples in the menu, and double click on one specific sample, it goes into the track's clip I selected. But it doesn't arm: meaning if I click with my space bar, that sample won't launch automatically with the rest of the session. Is there a way to set up Ableton such that loading audio files would "arm" automatically while starting session playback?
2 - as for midi files: when I double click them in the menu, it creates a new channel - instead of staying in the same track (below each other). Which I find very annoying while trying out different .mid files in the same channel with a vst (or synth). How do you guys go about this? Also, it doesn't start automatically with the rest of the session playback like the audio files.
3 - when I load my big collection of 3rd party samples, some load with the right BPM, some not (it's 50/50). Which is very annoying, I need to go into the clip view, unwarp/rewarp and enter the right sample BPM value to make it sync again. Is there not a way to normalise this process such that ALL samples would load automatically warped with their actual BPM?
4 - how can you delete multiples folders under "Places"? It's so annoying I tend to add shortcuts every week like 15/20 and when cleaning up there's no way to reset from scratch. You have to go one by one. Another waste of time.
5 - only 7 folders under "Collections"? I need at least 12. Poor choice by Ableton. They could at least give us 9 if they want to keep them assigned to number keys (1-9).
6 - generally speaking, how can I optimise my workflow without Push or Novation Launch Pro? I only have a Launch Control XL, without the pads to launch clips. Do I need to keep using my mouse to launch clips individually? There's no assignable key with my keyboard to launch Track 1, 2, 3, 4, etc.?
Thank you.

To reply to every Abes thread with 'have you tried BW?' is a choice, not a necessity, as is airing one's political beliefs in music forum discussions (which others may agree with or not). Choose to do it? Some folks will call you out on it, for sure. That said, as this thread has no instant derail WRT BW, it does indeed seem odd that folks would continue to get on his back about it, agreed that is unnecessary here, with only helpful replies being offered. Also seems odd that you would open up the politics side again but hey, whatever, your choice to be the first to bring it up in this thread..

OP - for me, no new version is ever totally necessary and as Live is relatively expensive, I always upgrade every 2 versions during the grace period i.e. I own L9 and will upgrade to L10 once L11 is announced. But that's just me.

It's basically Hosts & Applications (Sequencers, DAWs, Audio Editors, etc.) forum so it's not strange to see any DAW name in any thread. If you want to see users who only uses your XYZ(DAW name) go to XYZ forum e.g Bitwig has it in KVR.

I'd reply "the 'borderline' users and constant shilling put me off, why do you ask?" I'd probably also suggest seeking help.Jolaff wrote: Mon Nov 02, 2020 4:46 amand..... what would be your answer ?
