I found one forum post at Gearslutz describing the same problem. Do you use VST3 or VST2?
I am using VST2 64bit, haven't tried vst3. (Don't even know if there is a vst3 version installed.)

Post

VST2, I hate that Cubase sees and lists both versions. Easier not install the VST3 version in the first place.

Yeah for me that's the only annoyance, most plugins respond to velocity without it needing to be assigned, one area where trying to be faithful to the original goes too far.

Post

What I'm actually still trying to do is to let the filter respond to keytracking. The biggest luck I had so far was with setting up the curve to parabolic, but, even that doesn't sound quite right... what I'm trying to achieve is 100% keytracking for the filter, as on other synths. Anyone has an idea which curve I should choose for the modulation then? I would have thought linear, but, nope. That won't work.

TBH, I'm not even sure if what I'm trying is possible with the modulation matrix.

Really? Have you heard a Jupiter 8? It's pretty thin and the filters aren't anything to write home about. 40 years ago I certainly wouldn't have traded an Oberheim 8 Voice for one (if I'd even heard of an Ob 8 Voice, that is).
Well, it certainly is not a brute like Minimoog. Lots of musicians, including Talk Talk, Kajagoogoo etc., used the Jupiter 8 a lot on their early albums. Talk Talk used to use several units live.

This song is full of Jupiter 8 sounds, I love the way it sounds :)

Looks like both are behaving same in that I am not able to get velocity to respond in either. I select Velocity as Mod source and enable the slot, but there is no modulation being heard for any selected destination.

Is it a bug?

Post

It's definitely a bug, it just seems a bit intermittent because it definitely works sometimes.

Sure, so did a lot of my favourite local bands in the 80s, like MEO 245-

and Tablewaiters -

But, like me and everyone else, they used what they had available at the time. Do you think they'd still want to use the same synths today? I'd be very surprised if they did.

Never heard of those bands, but if they are still around, they would probably be playing their old stuff live like so many old bands  No idea what alternatives there are today to make the old sounds. I'm not observing the hardware market at all. But I do know that the old synth makers basically make updated versions of their old products today, like Oberheim/SCI and Moog.
Except for reliability reasons, I don't know why a band would no longer use their Jupiter 8 if they still had one and didn't want to use computers.

To each his own, but, the Jupiter-8 is one of the few analog poly synth I wouldn't really lust for. It's also coincidentally the only analog poly I ever heard in person. Which even makes it more of a shame that I dislike its sound. :)

If I had that monstrous amount of money, I'd definitely go for something which sounds warmer.

Yeah, I never heard a Jupiter-8 in person, but from all the media I watched in the internet, I never understood why it's so acclaimed. But, well, it's just a matter of taste :)

About the Oberhausen, it's amazing to realise nowadays you can get two of the best VA sounding synths (Oberhausen + TAL Mod) together for less than 50 bucks! :o

Is there a TAL Mod sale I'm missing?

It's 40% off on black friday (I'm assuming this year will be the same), that's how I got it last year!

Well, I do think it sounds lovely and neutral, neither warm nor cold:

Guys, let's get back to the Oberhausen topic, shall we. I apologize, I also got a little off by talking about TAL-Mod.

Post

Yeah, I'm just listening to bx_oberhausen pumping out two parts for Ultravox's Sleepwalk. It bassline sounds so much fuller and "creamier" than what I think is a MiniMoog in the original (but might be a CS-20) . It also does a great job of the big bass stab, that I assume was Billy Currie's Odyssey in the original.
e-crooner wrote: Fri Nov 06, 2020 7:34 pmNo idea what alternatives there are today to make the old sounds.
Quite literally anything. There is nothing special about "old sounds", especially anything you could do on a Jupiter 8. 90% of the time I find Union or Pigments just as capable of doing an old sequenced or arpeggiated line in an 80s cover as ARP Odyssey or bx_oberhausen.
I do know that the old synth makers basically make updated versions of their old products today, like Oberheim/SCI and Moog.
Of course they do, because there is no shortage of idiots who are willing to pay for them. But none of them adhere slavishly to their old designs, they modernise them and add all sorts of convenient, modern features. They seem happy to leave the full clones to Behringer.
Except for reliability reasons, I don't know why a band would no longer use their Jupiter 8 if they still had one and didn't want to use computers.
The thing is, they wouldn't still have one because they'd have traded it in decades ago for a DX-7 or a D-50 or an M1.
