Yes, it's a matter of taste, u-he is a really great developer and also very helpful, his synths are also working very good and are very good programmed, but if I open Dune3 the real magic begins!

For me when I open Zebra Music begins!
But either Magic or Music, let it happen!

Dune has better and more filters : true
Dune has an audio rate matrix :true
But also
Dune has a limited preconfigured 3 operator fm structure : true ( and yes I know about the layer system )
Dune can not do phase distortion : true
Dune can not be used as an effect plugin
Dune doesn't have spectromorph etc ( in combination with the osc.effects this is mighty powerfull) : true
etc...
Dune has a verry advanced va engine +wavetable and a bit of fm thrown in , zebra on the other hand covers a lot more synthesis styles
Both are great synths
Eyeball exchanging
Soul calibrating ..frequencies
Soul calibrating ..frequencies

Of all the U-He synths somehow I like Hive the most, it just offers the fastest way from the sound I hear in my head to the sound I hear in my DAW. it doesn't have FM or vowel filters but I managed to make quite a few FM and vowel sounds in it with the included wavetables. I realize that's a very lazy and cheating way of making sounds - take a cool wavetable and proceed from that - but if it sounds good who cares.
There's something in the sound character that really clicks with me (don't own it yet, but will buy soon. Already did
)
Bazille is my second favourite, it can sound absolutely amazing and I managed to make some crazy-ass sounds by happy accident, but learning to program it in a meaningful way takes some dedication. Maybe when I run out of cool wavetables in Hive I'll dive into that. Repros and Diva also sound stellar and have their place in my projects.
Never liked Zebra, it's crazy versatile but IMO the sound quality/character doesn't match other U-he offerings (yes, I know that it's good enough for Hans Zimmer and all, it just doesn't work for me). I'll take Dune3 over Zebra any day despite it's not my favourite synth (sonically) either.
It's not that I'm trying to talk Zebra down, people are getting amazing results with it. It's just my own impressions, if you like it, definitely get it. But don't expect Z3 any time soon, there seems to be massive amount of development planned and I guess it will be an absolute killer when it's out but we'll have to wait quite a some time.

I'm with you on this one. Using Zebra or in fact any other synth, coming from Hive is hard work, because you grow accustomed to how streamlined the workflow is. You can arguably do more with Zebra especially with its OSC FXand semi modular architecture, but it's clumsy by comparison. It's a long way off still, but I'm excited for Zebra3 as it is set to inherit many of the excellent features and workflows from Hive, but with more power and flexibility but for now Zebra2 just doesn't do it for me, for my needs.recursive one wrote: Tue Nov 10, 2020 7:47 am Of all the U-He synths somehow I like Hive the most, it just offers the fastest way from the sound I hear in my head to the sound I hear in my DAW. it doesn't have FM or vowel filters but I managed to make quite a few FM and vowel sounds in it with the included wavetables. If you could do PM between any and all of the oscillator types, I'd use it a lot more, in fact I probably would have sold my Serum license long ago (back when it was still possible ofc), giving it pride of 2nd place behind Hive in my arsenal
Always Read the Manual!

The latest version of Zebra is not 15 years old. I just bought Zebra 2 + HZ.. It's was updated a couple of weeks ago to v2.9.2. U-he keeps updating Zebra all the time.
If you buy Zebra 2 + HZ you will get Zebra 3 for free when it gets released.

Zebra 2.0 and Zebra 2.9 are pretty different synths for sure
